THE OFFICE “Goodbye Michael” Season 7 Episode 21 – Well, it is official: Michael Scott has left the building. This week THE OFFICE said goodbye to our favorite regional manager as Michael Scott went off to Colorado to live with Holly.
From the start of the episode we know that Michael is leaving the next day – the party planning committee is in full swing, Michael is saying goodbye to everyone, and he makes it very clear that he wants a drama free day.
Everyone at Dunder Mifflin are holding up their goodbyes for the next day, not realizing that Michael is leaving at 4PM THAT day. I LOVED that he didn’t want everyone to make a big deal about his departure, and instead left quietly. It shows how much Michael has grown and what a great guy he really is.
The gifts that he gives his employees are priceless. For Andy, all of Michael’s best accounts. We all know Andy isn’t the best sales person in the office – it’s a fact that he knows as well and doesn’t hesitate in telling this to Michael. But Michael insists and tells Andy that he has the ability to be a great salesman… and he proves him right.
Ryan receives Michael’s neon beer sign for his closet – which prompted one of my favorite lines of the episode: “You’re not prone to seizures, are you?”
Erin gets fatherly advice about Gabe (what a creep) and Andy; and after telling Michael she wished she knew her mom so she could tell her what to do, Michael says (and made me cry) “You don’t need your birth mother. You have my number, you can call me anytime.”
Dwight is receiving his present from the moment the episode airs – from the talk about salami and bears, to paint ball behind the building, and finally to his letter of recommendation…. which also made me cry because I am a sap.
Jim eventually figures out that Michael is leaving that same day… which prompts him to give a tearful goodbye to an even more tearful Michael; but Jim keeps his secret and says that he will say goodbye officially at lunch the next day. Michael and Jim have a great exchange where Michael asks him if he’s doing the right thing, and without hesitation Jim replies “Absolutely.”
Michael questions why he’s so sad and, forever the great guy, Jim sums up the episode in one line: “It’s just that sometimes goodbyes are a bitch.”
There was a brief moment where I didn’t think Pam would get a chance to say goodbye, but she meets Michael at the airport after he’s taken his microphone and they have their own moment of goodbye.
The best line of The Office? “Will you guys let me know if this ever airs?”
We’ll miss you, Michael!
