Survivor: Redemption Island “A Mystery Package”, Season 22 Episode 11 – Survivor: Redemption Island had another solid episode tonight, starting off with a nice little post-tribal scene. I thought that Steve’s apology at the beginning of “A Mystery Package” was really nice, even though it didn’t appear “genuous” to Philip, it seemed genuine to me! Between that apology and his hilarious exchange with Jeff about his log-rolling league, I’m becoming more and more of a Steve fan.
I know I’ve brought up this point in previous reviews, but I’m constantly surprised/impressed that the editors of Survivor this season seem willing to include so much of Matt’s spiritual journey. We’ve seen him talking about God and his plan for him before, but this time his speech towards the beginning of the episode was even accompanied by an angelic choir singing in the background. People have talked about God’s involvement in their games before, but definitely not to this point. Regardless of your religion or lack thereof, it’s really tough at this point to not root for Matt to not only make it out of Redemption Island but win it all. He just seems like a really solid guy. With Russell’s premature exit, he’s definitely the guy I hope will win it all.
The immunity/reward challenge was unfortunately a little too straight forward for me. Most of the challenges at this level of the competition usually have at least a couple stages to them, or a more impressive set. However, we get yet another retread of an old Survivor challenge. I know I complain about this every week, and I know that they can’t come up with a brand new, completely original game every week, but I wish that it wasn’t every single challenge that is remaking a challenge we’ve already seen. I mean, it is these guys’ jobs to just make up challenges every week. You’d think a little more brainstorming could go into it.
It was a good thing that this “Mystery Package” attempted to throw a wrench into tribal council, because they sure have been boring lately. You basically know it’s going to be somebody from Zapatera going home, and that if Steve didn’t win the surprise immunity challenge then he would be going home. They tried to throw us by getting us to think that they would possibly vote for Andrea, but you knew it wasn’t going to happen. I’m excited for the game now that we get to see the Ometepe tribe stab each other in the back. We’ll see that happen next week on Survivor!
Random Thoughts:
- I kind of wish Philip just kept mis-quoting Jack Nicholson’s famous line from “A Few Good Men”. “You can’t withstand the truth!” “You can’t perceive the truth!” “You wouldn’t believe the truth!” So close every time, Philip.
- What did Julie yell when she left Redemption Island? Was it “Peanut butter and oatmeal”? Peanut butter I can understand missing, but oatmeal? Out of all the different kinds of foods?
- It’s kind of weird now that the person who gets sent to the jury is seen again on the same episode. It used to be so exciting when the person who was voted out last week shows up at tribal council and you get to see them all clean and made up. It’s a little unfortunate that this little spurt of excitement is now absent from the episodes, but oh well.
