HBO in Discussions to Extend IN TREATMENT

In Treatment (HBO) - season3

After being widely reported that HBO’s IN TREATMENT had been cancelled, HBO has announced that this may not be the case. The show definitely will not continue in its current format, which airs multiple episodes in a week, instead of just one. But according to Deadline.com, HBO states that “we are in continued conversations with the executive producers to find another way to continue telling these rich stories.”

In Treatment follows psychoanalyst Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne) through his week of psychotherapy sessions with his patients. Each episode deals with a different patient, so that only a handful of patients are explored each season. The show was adapted from a popular Israeli series. The executive producers are Stephen Levinson, Mark Wahlberg, Anya Epstein, Dan Futterman, Paris Barclay and Hagai Levi.

In Treatment has dealt with this type of news before. Deadline.com details that the show was close to being cancelled after the second season, because it ran out of source material; the Israeli version of the show ran for only two seasons. Added to this creative hurdle were original showrunner Warren Leight’s departure and Byrne’s vocal comments about the demands of his role. HBO has not offered any ideas as to what the show’s new format or strategy might be, or even if Byrne will be returning.

Heard any more news on this? I love the show and especially Gabriel Byrne’s performance so I’d watch it in any format.
