CSI “Hitting for the Cycle” Review

CSI “Hitting for the Cycle”, Season 11 Episode 18 – CSI returned this week with a very appropriately named episode with “Hitting for the Cycle”. CSI have been repeats these past few weeks, so I’m sure it wasn’t a coincidence that it’s returning on opening day with a baseball related title.

However, the title does not refer to hitting a single, double, triple, and a home run in the same game as it does in baseball. In the CSI world, it means investigating a suicide, homicide, accidental death and natural death in the same shift. It was fun, if not a bit unsettling, that everybody had this side bet going throughout the episode. While it’s a bit morbid for everybody to be hoping that somebody would die of a natural death, it added some interesting rapport between the team that is so sorely missing from many procedurals nowadays. Just read my reviews of Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior to see a good example of a show that does not do a good job creating rapport among the cast members.

This episode actually hit home for me in a couple ways. First of all, I’m a pretty hardcore gamer myself, and I was pretty disappointed that the gamer that they chose to represent the culture was morbidly obese. Sure, they introduced a few other characters from that world, but they all ended up being reprehensible for other reasons.

Secondly, I was a little upset about everything having to do with the new Kevin character. Being born and raised in, and a current resident of Los Angeles, I hate the stereotype that L.A. natives are all womanizing yuppies. Also, not to stereotype against Las Vegas natives, but it seems a little rich for Sin City residents to criticize somebody from Los Angeles. Vegas has a much worse reputation than Los Angeles ever has, so I’m not sure why they’re acting like they’re so high and mighty and making fun of this guy who is clearly a loser, regardless of where he lives.

Anyway, the rest of the episode was a lot of fun. Even though most everything that came out of Kevin’s mouth made me cringe, and Jim’s one-liners and showing off was even worse than usual this week. The entire scene where Jim walked into the gaming competition with Greg, and proceeded to insult everybody in there and take all of the attention by taking center stage. Get over yourself dude.

In closing, Kevin’s death scene would have been so much effective for me to watch if my wife didn’t predict it happening as soon as he was introduced. Seriously, she has a sixth sense for this kind of stuff, she’s like a clairvoyant. I should have consulted her before filling out my bracket this year.

Random Thoughts:

- The puss discharge from that lady’s stomach was the grossest thing I’ve ever seen on CSI, and that’s saying something.

- I may not be a legal expert, but how on earth could somebody be charged for murder for shooting somebody in a video game!

- The loan shark, Carl Jansen, also played Frank Kraft in the 2002 CSI episode “High and Low”. Not many people out there get to play different roles on the same show. I guess they figure that most people won’t recognize you after nine years, so thank God for IMDb!
