SHAMELESS “Father Frank, Full of Grace” (Season Finale) Advance Review

SHAMELESS (Showtime) "Father Frank, Full of Grace"

SHAMELESS “Father Frank, Full of Grace” Season 1 Episode 12 (Season Finale) – This first eleven episodes of SHAMELESS zipped by and it’s already time for the “Father Frank, Full of Grace” season finale. I’ve seen it, and it’s a jam-packed and very satisfying rollercoaster of revelations, repercussions, and emotional choices woven together with the Gallaghers’ particular brand of humor and heart.

The penultimate episode left us with some heavy storylines to wrap up: Tony’s ultimatum to Steve, Lip and Ian’s arrest, and Karen and Frank’s Daddyz Girl sex. All those-and more-are dealt with as we pick up the action almost immediately following Fiona’s phone call from the police.

I don’t think the Karen/Frank sex was unexpected. If you’ve seen the British Shameless, you knew it was inevitable, but there have also been plenty of clues throughout the season. That doesn’t make it any easier to take, but I think it worked well within the story and it propels plenty of events in the finale. Karen is about as self-destructive as a character can get and Frank is-Frank. Karen absolutely initiated and I kind of love that she knew she needed drugs to get through it, but wow was she coming from a place of pain. The thing about pain, though, is that it can expand-and spread– exponentially if you’re not careful with how you deal with it. How careful do you think she’s being?

Franks is, as always, a fascinating character. Completely self-involved and self-deluded, he is a terrible father and human being, and mostly he blithely goes on his not so merry way. Once in a while, though, there’s a flash of something deeper, something better that not only makes this wreck of a man seem more human, but also makes him that much more frustrating. It’s a tough balancing act, but William H. Macy makes it look effortless.

My love for Lip and Ian, which was already considerable, grows tonight. Lip has the bigger story, but Ian has a long overdue scene that makes me cry a happy tear. Plus, I could watch the pitch-perfect interaction between the brothers for hours. As for Lip, my heart both breaks for him and fills with pride. Debbie, always such a tremendous mix of innocence and cynicism, gets in on the action, doing what a Gallagher has to do to protect the rest of the family. .

Fiona, as always the heart of the show, has a choice to make, even as she has no idea she’s the rope in Steve and Tony’s continuing tug of war. As much as I love all the characters on this show, there is something extraordinary about Fiona. As tough as she is, as savvy as she is, she has a marshmallow center. She tamps down so many needs-for trust, for love, for a moment of peace-and puts herself last so often that I’m glad she has the chance to think about what she wants. Veronica, God bless her, is there to help, and meets Jasmine in the process. Love this new wrinkle, by the way-V’s reactions are not to be missed. Kev once again saves more than one Gallagher, and Ethel is already practically one of the Gallaghers.

This is a particularly well paced and intricately plotted episode of Shameless, with storylines threaded together in interesting ways. As always, the acting is phenomenal and I don’t think there is a single weak link in the cast. The sibling scenes remain my favorites and there are some fabulous ones here. “Father Frank, Full of Grace” does everything a season finale should and it definitely leaves me anxious for next season.

After you’ve watched Shameless tonight on Showtime at 10pm eastern/9 central, I hope you’ll come back and post what you thought. Did anything surprise you or make you especially happy/unhappy? Man I love this show – I’m pretty upset that I have to wait till ‘next year’ for a new season. Is it really going to be an entire year before the next season is on?

I think it really will be next January. That is the worst thing about premium cable (abd many cable) shows–the seasons are short and they fly by. Then you have to wait nine months for the next new episodes. Sigh.

That last seen with Eddie literally made me choke, I thought he was going to kill Frank.
    Not expecting that!

The fallout should be interesting, to say the least.

It was such an incredible and emotional episode. ALL the actors were fabulous.

However, I have to give extra props to the actor playing Lip. For me, he stole the whole episode. The actor is simply phenomenal! And ALL of his scenes are right on the money. And tonight, especially, he made me REALLY feel for him. Hopefully, he’ll get an Emmy nomination for this episode alone!

And I thought the Lip/Karen relationship was especially amazing in this episode. For one thing, you could see how both of them were completely broken and lost. And then you also see that Lip does love her. Which is why he had such strong reactions to finding out about Frank.

I didn’t really watch the UK version of the show. But in it, did Lip forgive Karen for the Frank situation? In this US version, from what I understand, he did forgive her. And what I’m wondering is whether Karen/Lip officially got back together at the end of the episode. Michelle, what do you think? Was it a reunion between a couple? Or more of them being back as friends again?

I honestly hope the writers will keep Karen/Lip together in season 2. I find their relationship to be very touching and unique.

And it’s hard to be upset with Karen because she is broken right now due to her father issues. She was definitely acting out. AND Lip did call her a “whore” in the previous episode. So I think that comment combined with her father humiliating her at that purity meeting is what set her off. You cannot really hold it against someone who is right now very vulnerable and fragile.

Also, I’m TRULY hoping Steve will be back. Justin Chatwin is an amazing actor. And I would really dislike it if Steve just left like in the UK version. The US actors have longer contracts, at least 6 years. So I hope the writers will find a way to keep building the Steve/Fiona romance and keep the actors on the show.

I’m not sure what they will do next year. But hopefully, Steve will be back in the first episode. Not later like in the UK version.

What happened re: Lip/Karen in the UK version can be thrown out as a model, thank goodness. In the UK version, it was a full-blown affair and Karen dumped Lip for Frank. That is what I have been dreading all season because this Lip/Karen got to me much more than the UK version.

I think what we saw at the end of the relationship s them actually starting to be a couple with no more games between them. Of course that could be wishful thinking, but I have to believe the producers and writers see how special the connection between those two actors is.

Karen truly is broken and Lip being there even after the horror that was her sex with Frank may be one thing that can help heal her. With what happened to Eddie, she’s going to need him more than ever.

I have no idea what they’re going to do with Steve. I’m afraid they will keep him away for at least a couple of episodes so we can have a bonafide love triangle with Tony, but there does need to be some fallout from Debbie’s visit to Steve’s mom, so we’ll see.

Thanks for answering my questions, Michelle. I only saw a bit of youtube clips of the UK version. So I can’t really recall what happens.

I’m hoping Steve/Justin Chatwin will come back in episode 1. I don’t know how they’ll handle situation, though. However, he does come from a very wealthy family. So I can see how he would not go to prison if he has such a high society type of a family that can keep him out of jail. Perhaps, the writers will show Steve back at his parents’ home at the start of the season.

And I do hope you’re right about Lip/Karen. The actors do have such special connection on the screen. And I’d like to see them continuing to develop together.

I would LOVE to see Steve/Jimmy with his family in the new season because there are so many possibilities with the dual life and the Gallaghers meeting his family. Plus Julia Duffy as the drunken mom tickles me to no end.

          I hope I’m right about Lip/Karen, too. :)
