GENERATOR REX “Mixed Signals” Episode 28 – Recently it seems like Generator Rex has been putting in a little extra work into filling in the blanks in the pasts of our protagonists. Last week we got some background on Six and this week, we get a whole lot of information about Rex thanks to the unexpected appearance of his brother, Caesar.
After seeing visions of a machine from a nanite point of view, Rex loses control of his body which automatically produces the pieces for assembly. It turns out his brother, Caesar, had been sending signals to the Omega 1 Nanite to cause it to build a device to track down it’s location. Not knowing that the Omega 1 Nanite had been injected into Rex’s bloodstream and had merged with his DNA, Caesar ends up tracking down his brother as well.
It was nice to get this follow up to the rumored brother that Rex wasn’t sure he had. As far as Caesar knew, everyone around Rex was out to get him so I liked that he instantaneously took over the role of protective older brother. To Caesar, only 15 minutes had passed since he last saw Rex so he was just happy to see him alive even if he was 5 years older than he expected. The same shockwave blast that most likely gave Rex his amnesia and killed his parents, knocked Caesar’s ship into an uncontrollable sub-light speed, causing him to experience time dilation. The 5 years that Rex has been living with amnesia on Earth were a mere 15 minutes to Caesar as he struggled to regain control of his flying laboratory in the atmosphere.
Watching the two of them side by side, it’s easy to see how Caesar and Rex fell from the same tree. Besides their obvious appearance, neither one of them seem too intimidated by authority figures and they both have a quirky sense of humor. Caesar indicates that he has had a past with Van Kleiss but that he thought of him as more of a degenerate nuisance than a villain. The fact that he casually returns to the lab at Abysus and approaches the dangerous EVOs with curiosity highlights the fact that he definitely knows nanites, but doesn’t know anything about what has gone wrong with them. Seeing Van Kleiss’ reaction to the familiar ship also seems to indicate that he thinks of Caesar’s reappearance as an unwelcome return.
Caesar is a super-geek and his addiction to science and discovery overcomes every other emotion. He’s had no awareness of the developments in the last 5 years which makes him all at once naive and fearless in the face of danger. I like that he sets himself up at Providence without asking permission or allowing himself to be restricted by them. He has no idea what Providence is or who the Pack is, so he has no allegiance to anything but his research and his only remaining family. Rex managed to fill him in a little bit, but I’m really looking forward to seeing how Caesar will react when he’s completely brought up to date with the happenings of the last 5 years. In turn, I hope that Caesar will bring his knowledge of Rex’s forgotten past and history to use in giving Rex a better idea of what Van Kleiss has been planning.
Caesar also brought in some nice character history for Rex, including that he was born in Geneva to parents of Mexican and Argentinian origin. Caesar also teased him about his bad Spanish and about how Rex had always wanted to be an accordion player which is a hilarious contradiction to what Rex had imagined for himself. Even if Rex felt that he had found a complete family in the people he met through Providence, I hope that he’s able to form a bond with Caesar that will allow him to recover the memories of the family that loved him before.
There wasn’t much significant action in “Mixed Signals”, but I really enjoyed the story. There was a lot of information to process in a single episode of Generator Rex, but it seems to have made up for a few of those episodes earlier in the season that were fun, but did nothing for the main story line. The introduction of Caesar and the additional background he brought with him gives the show a whole new momentum and I’m really looking forward to seeing how Generator Rex progresses from this point onward.
