BEN 10: ULTIMATE ALIEN “The Creature From Beyond” Season 2, Episode 7 – A lot of the more recent episodes of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien have felt like they were stand alone episodes, but tonight’s episode seemed like we were getting a little taste of a much bigger and more complex plot to come.

A new faction of the Forever Knights are introduced and in their hunt for alien technology they unleash a dangerous creature from behind a mysterious seal. This group headed by Sir Cyrus, claims superiority over the other Forever Knight factions because of it’s loyalty to the ideas and methods of “The First Knight.” Even if he does think poorly of the other Forever Knight groups, Sir Cyrus doesn’t strike me as any different. He’s impulsive, quick to jump to irrational conclusions, underhanded and he seems to have a bad attitude towards both alien abilities and magic. He uses the phrase “alien scum” and refers to Gwen as a sorceress, but says it with such disdain that it’s obviously intended as an insult. In short, Sir Cyrus is a jerk. Winston, his squire, seems too nice to be in his service, so I’m curious to find out how he came to have a loyalty to Sir Cyrus.

Sir Reginald, the knight leading the excavation of the sealed section of the cave, ends up releasing a thought sucking, mind controlling creature from another dimension called La Cubra. La Cubra escapes and on it’s thought sucking rampage, it attempts to take everyone under it’s control. When it attempted and failed to take control over Kevin’s mind, I laughed at first thinking that they were going to explain that Kevin didn’t have the necessary brain waves to feed the monster and that’s why he was immune. It turns out Kevin’s brainwaves are perfectly fine. Apparently La Cubra can not penetrate certain materials and that’s why Kevin was immune. Kevin’s tin foil hat comment when he put a helmet on Gwen was cute, and it turns out, he was right.

This episode of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien leaves a lot open at the end. Sir Cyrus and Ben don’t really resolve their issues even if they come to a temporary truce. Winston seems to still be under some kind of influence from La Cubra which means that the same might be possible for the others who were under it’s control, including Gwen.

At the very end, “Old George,” the guy from the nursing home at the beginning of the episode, mysteriously walks up to the broken seal in the cave and with a look tinged with disappointment and determination, walks away without a word. My mind immediately started racing with ideas: Might he be an old Knight charged with protecting that seal to the other dimension? Might he be an old villain who has been waiting for that seal to break so he could use the powers that were locked behind it? Could he be a direct descendant of the First Knight? Could he be from the same dimension as La Cubra? There are so many possibilities for this mysterious character who was ignored for the majority of the episode, but was important enough to start and end the episode with. I look forward to finding out what is revealed in coming episodes of Ben 10: Ultimate Alien to decide who is really friend or foe because things never end up being as straightforward as they seem.

I liked your ideas about the “Old George Character” I thought that this episode might be setting up for Gwen’s turn as a villain, Kevin did it last season and Ben had a turn as training for the new plumbers and exploring how they’d cope without her

Oh, I hadn’t really considered Gwen being used as a villain, but you’re right, it’s her turn and she was definitely the most affected by the creature. Interesting – I hope they get back to this soon!
