SMALLVILLE “Fortune” Season 10 Episode 15 – There are only seven episodes left of the saga of Clark Kent’s evolution into Superman. The titular fortune of this episode was no one thing: it was not just the armoured van filled with money; it was not just Lois’ lost engagement ring. It was also about Clark Kent and his small circle of friends. It was the fortune he has gained over the past decade, the fortune of loved ones who would sacrifice everything for the perfect prophet Man of Steel. And like Lois’ lost engagement ring, like the van filled with money, Clark Kent’s fortune could likely disappear in a flash.
Smallville has never really tried an episode like this before. Sure, cheesy, tongue-in-cheek comedy has become a staple of all but the darkest of episodes, but for the first thirty minutes, Smallville went for outright laughs. Whether or not it succeeded depends on your own sense of humor. Personally, I loved this episode.
And sure, there were flaws. The Hangover schtick was a tad predictable (swapping tiger for lemur was probably a wise move) and the plotting was ridiculously weak, throwing almost every cliché in the screwball rom-com book at the screen. But when you have characters as strong as those drugged up for the bachelor/bachelorette party, the clichés can work.
It was important to see Clark, Lois, Oliver, Chloe, Tess and Emil enjoying each other’s company without the threat of imminent death bringing them together. The pairings were wisely matched, considering Chloe’s decision at the end.
Whilst any minute watching Lois and Oliver banter is an enjoyable one, watching Oliver (and Lois, but Justin Hartley’s make up made him look so pretty) don feathers and a bra was certainly a highlight of the episode. That, and Clark and Chloe’s wake up bafflement: “Oh God, don’t say the word consummate. The answer has to be no!” Capping off with the footage of Tess and Emil, this was certainly a good episode for couples.
Nowhere more evident than in the confrontation between Chloe and Oliver, who, during their drunken rampage, unwittingly but quite willingly got hitched. So when Chloe decides to go off on her own and help the Batmans and Wonder Womans of the world realize their full potential, as she had for Clark, Oliver decides that she need not be alone.
It was a light hearted episode which made the departure of Chloe and Oliver all the more poignant.
Clark’s fortune is already splintering.
