CSI: NY “The Untouchables” Review

CSI: NY (CBS) The Untouchable

CSI: NY “The Untouchables” Season 7 Episode 16 – Before we discuss this week’s episode, let’s all take a second to address the “upcoming scenes” that just about every TV show presents at the end of their programming. I personally HATE these. I fast-forward through the upcoming scenes on every show I watch. For me, it completely takes away the surprise. For dramas, they sometimes give away big plot points or important information of that episode which completely spoils it for people trying to go into it fresh. For comedies, we see a few of the jokes completely out of context in a completely different manner than the writers wanted us to see them.

The reason I’m bringing this up now is that the most recent episode of CSI: NY, “The Untouchables”, had an opening scene that was completely ruined by the last episode’s “upcoming episode” scenes. All of the punch and the drama of Mac taking off the mask and revealing that the hostage was him was completely ruined if you watch those freaking scenes! If I wasn’t so busy writing my review last week, I would have skipped those scenes and been totally surprised when I saw Mac’s face. But alas, I wasn’t. I implore you all to not watch those scenes on all of your shows for this next week. See how it feels to watch all of your shows with a completely blank slate, and let me know what you think.

Ok, I guess I should step down from my soapbox to let you know what I thought of this episode. The “conspiracy theorist” is a tried and true plot device. The issue is, the conspiracy theorist needs to pull of the role well, or else the whole thing falls flat on its face. Unfortunately, that’s what happened here. The actress playing Tessa just didn’t cut the mustard, acting wise, when it comes to portraying a deranged paranoid. Also, a little too pretty and well put together if you ask me. There have been so many great actors across the years portraying roles like this, so to watch somebody try and fail so miserably can be tough to watch.

Conveniently enough, she was right about there being some kind of conspiracy (as most conspiracy theorists in movies/shows like this often are). There were no big surprises how this ended up. Turns out the fancy, elitist club that hires high-class prostitutes with cocaine for their orgy parties weren’t a group of stand-up gentlemen. What a surprise. They should have just hired Charlie Sheen to manage that situation, he’s got experience with this kind of stuff. I heard he can solve situations like this with his mind!

Random Thoughts:

- I like how Sela Ward’s “southern accent” pops in and out at random. And by “like” I mean “Am driven crazy by”.

- Speaking of Sela, did anybody else hear her tell Keith “You don’t want to get into any more trouble than you already am”? Hey Sela, when am you going to learn how to talk?

- I feel like Dr. Sid is just disconnecting and connecting his stupid magnet classes all the time now. I feel like he used to do it maybe once or twice an episode, but now it’s once or twice every time he’s on screen. Surely it can’t save you that much time.

Just re-watched it. Sela told Keith “You don’t want to get into any more trouble than you’RE already in?”
