THE VAMPIRE DIARIES “The House Guest” Season 2 Episode 16 - Oh, this episode. It was so awkward and disjointed, nothing quite meshing together correctly, but I loved it anyway. But seriously now, can someone get a psychiatrist over to Mystic Falls ASAP? Because it is unhealthy the way these kids fall into relationships like their lives depend on it. You’re 17, chickettes, this relationship failing is not the end of the world. Well, unless you’re Elena. Without a man in her life she’d probably be dead in 0.3 seconds flat. I have issues with this but let’s leave all talk of girl power aside, shall we?
Okay, so by the end of the episode we’re down two witches, Isobel is back in town and The Human (i.e. Matt) knows about the existence of vampires. The Human was only called The Human because he was the only one aside from The Liability (Jenna, natch) that didn’t know about the dark side of the world, so, uh, do we need a new nickname for him? Answers on a postcard. Alternatively in the comment box.
I’m not sad to see Luca go, partly because I’m still not sure how to spell his name (is it Luca or Luka? Sheesh) and partly because he was such a non-character. He turned up, did vaguely witchy stuff and then disappeared. He was as 2D as a character can possibly be. His father’s death was a little more troubling. While I loved that he gave Witchy B back her powers, DaddyWitch was a nice touch of ambiguity that this series is otherwise missing. Damon is now a good guy, Katherine is playing nice – there is no other character that treads the middle ground right now.
Or is there? I have no clue where the Matt storyline is going to go, but he’s ripe to be plucked by UncleDaddy John and trained up as a vampire hunter. Can you imagine? It’d be like Buffy and Angel in reverse. This idea pleases me. Mostly because it’d be great revenge for Kickass Caroline melting my stone cold heart with that song and Matt killing me with that kiss. You guys! I love you. You can’t be over. I refuse to believe it.
In other news: Jeremy and Witchy B are the cutest thing ever. How does this show do this to me? I’m not a big fan of romance in my TV, but I was on the edge of my seat when Witchy B told Elena that she wanted to date Jeremy. I was psyching up to bitch at the screen if Elena was annoyed and instead was really happy when she wasn’t. (And by ‘really happy’ I mean I squealed ‘yay!’ because I am all of five years old, apparently.)
Does anyone else think it weird that Stefan apparently can’t tell Katherine and Elena apart any more? It used to take him a while, sure, but he figured it out in the end. Now it’s not as easy. I still think he’s going to end up doing the dirty with Katherine at some point, whether he knows it or not. He’s really a great counterpoint to Damon, whose heart keeps getting stomped on by his vampiric ex-lover. Note to Kat: you might wanna stop reminding him how much you don’t want him, sweetheart. Note to Damon: to be honest, I wouldn’t have kicked her out of my bedroom, so more power to you, dude.
Alaric, Jenna and Isobel: I have no idea what to feel about this. I like the drama and the tension, but it’s all just too much right now. There’s this semi-incestuous tangle of people and children and events and it’s just starting to get on my nerves. I’m half-expecting Elena’s parents – her adopted parents, Jeremy’s blood parents (or are they? Who knows anymore?) to turn up, back from the dead.
Although it’s the crux of the series right now, I can’t wait for this Klaus storyline to be done, over, finito. The slate needs to be cleared somewhat so we can appreciate the great storytelling that The Vampire Diaries has at its core.
