NIKITA “Echoes” Season 1 Episode 16 - In tonight’s NIKITA, Amanda sends Alex on a drug-induced adventure, where Alex conjures up little Alexandra Udinov, the gang at Division, Nathan, and her father. She is chased by the red symbol of Zetrov, her father’s company, and is haunted by the secrets she knows and the secrets she is hiding.
Alex’s hallucinogenic treatment in this episode “Echoes” brings many issues to surface. First is the question of Alex’s legacy. Is she hiding from it or running away from it? Next is the question of her future plans. She envisioned a life with Nathan, seeing it as a way out. But her ego killed him and consequently the idea of a normal future. Because of this, Alex has begun to understand the dangers of Division, not just in relation to her own life but to those around her. Ultimately, Alex is just scared and trying to protect herself and others from harm – physically and psychologically. In the end, she voices her concern to Nikita about getting out of Division before it’s too late. Did you expect this to happen? I figured Nikita would be the one to bring up the topic and force Alex to make the decision to stay safe.
Also I did not expect Michael to be sitting there, waiting for Nikita after she returns from securing a new identity for Alex. Michael is angry and ready for a fight as usual. It was obvious that Michael was close to discovering Nikita’s location and the relationship between Alex and Nikita, but I thought the show might first let him play cat and mouse games with Nikita and Alex.
Amanda tells Alex that she has nothing to fear as long as she continues to do her job and remain detached. But then Amanda turns around and tells Percy that she didn’t find what she was looking for from Alex. She recommends cancellation because Alex could be another Nikita. In other words, Alex has a desire to escape Division for a normal civilian life and has an aversion to killing. Is this simply a foreshadowing of betrayal, or is there some other meaning in Amanda’s contradictory statements? Or maybe Amanda is just sore that Alex got the better of her.
Two episodes in a row centered on Alex are logical in terms of the chronology of the plot, but odd for a show called Nikita. Knowing that The CW is attempting to redirect Nikita‘s appeal, I was not sure how I felt about all the attention being paid to Alex and her background. After tonight’s episode “Echoes,” I see the possibilities that are open to the show, especially if writers decide to turn Alex into a rogue agent like Nikita. Now that both Nikita and Alex have changed their outlooks on love and life, multiple storylines can be explored in various settings. It will be fascinating to see where the show takes the story and characters. I’m even starting to look forward to it. What type of show will Nikita become?
What direction do you want Nikita to take? What did you think of episode 16 “Echoes” of Nikita?
