SURVIVOR REDEMPTION ISLAND “You Own My Vote” Review, Season 22 Episode 2 – Ahoo-rah! Survivor, and more importantly Philip, returned this week with another awesome episode in “You Own My Vote”.
The strategizing in both tribes went as expected. While I originally thought it was cool to have Russell and Boston Rob back in the game, I kind of wish they weren’t doing the exact same thing that they’ve done in their previous seasons. Boston Rob is finding his strong female partner a la Amber, and Russell is finding his threesome to take him to the end. You’d think these guys would think “Well, this didn’t work last time, maybe I should change it up.” Hopefully they switch up their strategies down the road, but so far it seems like the same old song and dance.
Man that was one of the closest immunity challenges I’ve seen in a while. The animal in Philip almost came out, but it looks like it’ll remain caged for one more episode at least. The resulting scene with Russell trying to hide his clue from Ralph was classic Russell. His brazen bravado will either reinforce the hate of the Russell haters, or just make all of his fans love him more. Listen, I’m a big Russell fan from his previous seasons, but his whole intimidation thing is just getting tiring. It seems to especially lose its punch when the guy he’s threatening actually has an idol, and he’s saying he doesn’t know how to play the game. Better wise up quick, Russell, especially if you want to make it to your third consecutive finals.
Let’s talk about Matt real quick. I personally think it’s stupid to vote out somebody who is so strong in challenges so early, as he could have helped his tribe break their losing streak. Was it stupid to congratulate the other team for beating you twice in a row? Yes. However, you send somebody who is good at challenges to Redemption Island, where they will be doing nothing except competing in challenges. This is a decision that could definitely come back to bite you down the road, especially without knowing when they will return.
I was wondering last week where in the episode they would fit in all of the extra footage of the “Redemption Island” segment of the show. Survivor episodes have basically been edited the exact same way for 21 seasons now, so to add in an extra game and extra screen time every week will be interesting to watch. I’m thinking that they will show the Redemption Island challenge early in the episode, but I guess we won’t find out until next week!
Random Thoughts:
- I don’t know if you guys “like” Survivor on Facebook, but they post a lot of behind-the-scenes videos and interviews. The one posted today (2/23/11) introduced us to Scott Probst, Jeff’s youngest brother who works on the show as a set designer! Pretty cool stuff, so go check it out.
- Matt’s impression of the late, great Steve Irwin while watching Philip hunt was hilarious. It kinda made me wish the guy stuck around a bit longer.
- Philip’s tattoos are awesome. I think it’d be great if every week we discover new tattoos on his body of different animals. Maybe he’s like The Illustrated Man.
