NCIS “Kill Screen” Review

NCIS (CBS) Kill Screen

NCIS “Kill Screen” Season 8 Episode 16 – An episode about people hiding secrets in computer games was the perfect vehicle for a very McGee-centric episode. A bunch of us were saying up here last week that it was time that McGee had a relationship and that was something they definitely addressed in this one, though most of us also agreed that he should have that relationship with Abby and that’s not what happened.

One thing that confused me a little (and maybe one of you fine fans got a handle on it where I didn’t) – why was McGee hesitant? At first I thought he was just being a little gun shy after all the bad luck he’s had in that department but after his brief chat with Abby, I thought maybe he was thinking about her. So when he asked the other girl out in the end, I was more confused than ever.

Not that I disliked the other girl but I guess now I’m starting to understand how the Tiva lovers feel. Why give us little McAbby moments if they aren’t going to lead anywhere? Because that’s one romantic coupling I can totally get behind on this show. Whereas I felt that Tony and Ziva would not work (exactly because of all that flirting they’ve done for years that went nowhere), Abby and McGee somehow feel right to me. Maybe it’s because they already were an item, I’m not sure, but whatever the reason I’m so for those two getting together, which is why I was a little disappointed we didn’t see things going in that direction. Then again, nothing is set in stone so I’m going to wait and see what happens.

My favorite bits..

How quickly the guy said it wasn’t his purse when he saw what was in it. Yuck!

Gibbs going from punching the monitor to beating it with a baseball bat.

Cracking up when Ducky commented that it was a stylish bag and then laughing even harder when Palmer spotted that it was a fake. I did like that Tony complimented him for the nice catch though.

Literally groaning out loud when Ducky their victim had been killed on the rack. Ugh!

McGee claiming that laser tag was too geeky even for him, right before some dude ran up and called him “McGee-minator.” Ha! Another McName and this one wasn’t even from Tony.

Abby’s McGee Defense Fund jar.

OMG I think McGee just may have met his perfect match.

Hmmm..interesting conversation between McGee and Abby about whether or not he had or had not met someone.

McGee assuming that Gibbs would know what “Pong” was. Right generation, but you’d also have to assume the man would have ever been interesting in playing video games. Somehow I don’t think so.

Laughing out loud when the guy asked if he could call Gibbs, Jethro. Ha! As if.

Palmer and Ducky going over the finer points of zombie killing. I’d never heard of the brains leaking out and needing to be killed separately thing. I’m going to have to remember that one.

Loving this bit: McGee: “Who said I was hiding?” Tony: “The guy who’s been working with you for the past seven years.”

Loving this line from Tony: “But there’s taking it easy and then there’s being a dumbass, which is kinda my strong suit.”

Yes! McGee (okay yeah and the rest of the team, too) catching Martin as a murderer. Gotta admit, I never saw that coming and I especially enjoyed the fact that they fooled him into confessing.

Waiting for McGee to realize that it WAS a damn video game and being very happy when he finally did so he could help Gibbs.

The very calm way Gibbs announced: “Hey McGee, you missed one.”

Gibbs’ solution for computer problems actually turning out to be the right one for once.

McGee thanking Tony for the advice.

McGee screaming “don’t shoot!” when he heard Gibbs hollering at his computer again. LOL.

Great article! And I wouldn’t worry…McGee’s relationships never seem to carry on to the next episode… I like when McGee gets a date, and Abby is obviously affected by that, but pretends not to be hehehe. But poor McGee, seriously. He’s got horrible luck with girls.

    • Anonymous

I know! He really does! He’s even worse than Tony when you think about it. I hope he gets some better luck soon. He deserves it.

  • Cheyennejsmith

Okay, for the confusion you have lol: Tony asked Maxine out for McGee, otherwise I don’t think Tim ever would have gone with her. I think Tim just felt pressured into liking her because that’s all Ziva and Tony kept talking about with him. I LOVED the moments with Tim and Abby together in the lab. It hasn’t happened enough this season so I am very happy that it looks as though they are getting back to normal. I think if anything serious was gonna happen with this girl then she would become recurring, and I think that spoiler would have been leaked by now, so I doubt anything will come from it. Once again, I loved the review :)

Ah, now see this is why I need you guys to help me catch the stuff I miss because I actually never realized that Tony asked the girl out on McGee’s behalf. I thought the thank you was for giving him the courage to do it. That makes a lot more sense.

Thanks for clearing that up! Glad you liked the review. :o )

      • Cheyennejsmith

I miss stuff on episodes too. Every one does… Which is why I choose to watch every episode multiple times lol :)

You are very welcome, and thank you for writing amazing reviews! They are so much fun to read.

Yeah I used to watch the eps multiple times too, but now I have to get reviews up so fast I no longer have the luxury. Oh well. LOL.

Aw thanks, I’m so glad you enjoy them! You just made my day. *blushes*

Even in a McGee-centric show, one still gets the essence of Gibbs and DiNozzo. Gibbs frustration with technology and how to simplify it was masterful. DiNozzo’s throw-away lines were actually more insightful than any the whole season. Tony wasn’t playing the idiot in this show but rather the true big brother type who genuinely sees the big picture. Loved it and cannot wait to see how the rest of the season plays out. Maybe the shrink (Kate’s sister) actually helped Tony more than anyone thought.

I can’t agree more. I purposely tried to concentrate on McGee but I couldn’t help but to notice the little things that you did, too. That one line, about being a dumbass with girls, was given as an aside and yet was probably one of the most important things he’s ever uttered about his past with women. Maybe you’re right about the shrink.

And Gibbs’ anger towards all things technological was hilarious and yet so very perfect.

Liked last night and as always thanks for the review.

Has it been discussed here but what’s with the weight loss on McGee? I think it is so dramatic as to be worrying.

    • Suzy

Actually. He’s lost weight ever since season 6. I can’t understand why people haven’t seen that. You are right that it is really showing now though. But it is a health choice Sean has made. He has even felt the need to make a statement on twitter saying he’d started a healthier way of eating and no alcohol. He’s fine and as I’ve interpet it feeling better for it.

You beat me to it, Suzy. I was about to come up and say the same thing. I think it’s awesome that Sean decided to live a more healthy lifestyle. I’ll admit it took some getting used to, being so familiar with a slightly chubbier McGee for all those years, but hats off to him for doing it.

I think his hesitation to ask the girl out came from the bad luck he’s had in the past, plus a reluctance to get involved with a witness. Tony asking him out for her was just about the sweetest thing we’ve seen him do in a long time; it renewed my faith in a character that I’ve been sick of for a long time. I did like that it unsettled Abby; I’m not a very strong McAbby supporter, but I do want the poor guy to find somebody, and TPTB seem to be (horribly slowly) pushing toward those two. Maybe Abs’ll finally realize that McGee isn’t going to be around forever and she’ll reevaluate her stance on him . . . although I doubt it’ll happen any time soon.

And the Pong comment was hilarious! Tim’s trying to make this joke but he doesn’t seem to comprehend that it’s not just an age thing, it’s a Gibbs thing. McGee is so awesomely geeky. He’s my favorite character and I was thrilled to get an episode focused on him.

I think you’re right about Abby possibly rethinking her stance w/McGee, and I also agree that it probably won’t happen soon. Yes, Tony asking the girl out for McGee was unbelievably sweet.

      Love this:
“…he doesn’t seem to comprehend that it’s not just an age thing, it’s a Gibbs thing”

OMG you so nailed it! What a perfect way to put it.

This was a very silly episode despite the horrible way the victims died. You knew from the start that Gibbs was going to beat a computer death, preferably a big computer. I hope the girl gamer turns out to be good for McGee and that he has some romance and fun for a few episodes. The security guy was the BAD GUY from the moment he arrived. Gibbs’ super-spiderman-senses must have been out for once. The whole maze in the chamber of secrets thing was very very silly and Gibbs shooting the computer was just pandering to the audience. Love this show anyway.

And yes, beating up or shooting a monitor was really not cool and even Gibbs should know that much. Reminds me of an old X FIles episode in which an evil computer was able to spy through other computers even though they had no modems and were not Internet ready.

Ok, so on relationships – did I hallucinate it, or was there a couple of episode arc where Tony and Ziva were doing the horizontal mambo? Then we have Gibbs and his succession of women. Ditto for Tony. McGee and Abby have a past relationship. My personal theory is that they will never ship two main characters – other than in passing – for the heightened sexual tension.

There is also the issue of these people apparently working 24/7 – who has time for a relationship?

I’m not really that big into ship, but do enjoy the teasing and hinting.

I also really enjoyed this episode, and did not see the final revelation coming! I’m sitting here trying to count the number of times I have seen scifi shows where the computer is shot, or unplugged, to solve the “bad computer taking over the world.” Goes all the way back to 2001: A Space Odyssey – “Dave, what are you doing Dave?” 8-)

Well I never got the impression that Tony and Ziva slept together. I think though that I understand how some people could see that. The show made a big deal out of them going to Paris together and lying about who slept where and of course there’s be a whole heck of a lotta flirting but I’m still choosing to believe that it never went any further than that.

Good point about a show not shipping main characters so I guess it’s interesting to note that McGee and Abby’s relationship happened before either of them were main characters.

I agree, normally I’m all about teasing and hinting but with nothing actually happening. Like I said, I think the only reason I’m okay with Abby and McGee as a possible relationship is because they’re already been there and done that. It’s already in their cannon, almost from day one.

LOL, yes that ending was a little reminiscent of 2001, with a Gibbs twist on it of course.

Just saw it and I must say that was one of the worst episodes of NCIS. The romantic attempt with Maxine felt forced, all the techno-babble was silly and, as its usual on TV shows, made no sense at all. Ugh…
