CASTLE “Setup” Review

CASTLE (ABC) Setup

CASTLE “Setup” Season 3 Episode 16 – If you were looking for a light and fluffy episode of this show, then you were definitely looking in the wrong place last night. When this one started out with Castle being dragged into a room to the tune of screaming alarms, I knew right then we were in for another one of those episodes they’ve been doing so well recently – one full of action and drama.

The case starts out fairly innocuous, but when things go wrong – as in a dirty bomb loose in the city wrong – a DHS agent (played wonderfully by Heroes’ Adrian Pasdar) is sent in to take over. Once he does, Castle gets a feeling that something isn’t right and Beckett lets him run with it. Doing so gets them both thrown off the case but as we’ve seen in the past, that never works and they of course keep working on it on their own.

That leaves Castle and Beckett trapped together in a freezer with a dirty bomb loose in the city somewhere and all of us having to wait until next week to see what happens. I don’t know about anyone else, but I’m gonna be on pins and needles until then.

My favorite bits..

Trying to decide if that opening scene reminded me more of ET or of an episode of The X-Files.

My jaw dropping when Lanie called Esposito “baby.”

Castle saying that their suspect didn’t have the improv skills to make up that story.

Ryan giving his report to Castle because he knew he would get it to Beckett for him.

Knowing that every other Browncoat in the world appreciated the entire “Serenity Oasis” conversation just as much as I did.

Castle crowning himself “Best Dad Ever” after getting Alexis out of the trip.

The panicked look on Castle’s face when Beckett pulled Fariq’s weapon and handed it to him.

Agreeing with Castle that Beckett did indeed look pretty hot with those bolt cutters…and I’m a straight female so that’s saying something.

The way Castle said “Ark of the covenant, Dr. Jones?”

Being more frightened by the terror in Beckett’s voice when she called in for help than by anything she could have actually said at that moment.

Wondering why they were just letting Beckett and Castle sit in a room and not stripping them down and scrubbing them clean. Isn’t that what they do when there’s a radiation threat?

Castle’s hopeful look and the way he started to speak when Beckett said she’d wished that she could just be with someone who could be there for her and she for him.

Castle looking anything but relieved when the guy came in to tell them they were okay.

Castle making sure that both his daughter and mother were going to be safely out of the city and then overhearing both Ryan and Esposito’s attempts to do the same thing with the people they cared about.

Castle cleverly playing the governor card to stay on the case.

Not really liking the way Fallon referred to an infant as a “nice touch” and a “money pit.” Sure I get the reason why he did it all, but man that was hard to watch.

Beckett referring to Fallon as a douche. LOL.

Castle spotting that the details in their story weren’t right.

Really liking the fact that the captain not only spoke up for Beckett but Castle, too.

Castle and Beckett finding the bomb. Eek.

Becket, Castle, trapped in a freezer, the bomb on the move..and they end it THERE??? Holy crap!!

I’ve rewatched that scene where they’re in isolation about a hundred times, and that moment where Castle’s about to speak, and you can see in his face he’s decided to seize the opportunity and say something major, but that guy interrupts them–it KILLS me every time. Second favorite moment is Castle sending Alexis off with Martha and he’s got tears in his eyes as he watches her go; he’s scared he’ll never see them again but he’s not running away himself and you can see him thinking that no matter what, at least they’ll be safe.

I also loved that moment when Ryan gives his report to Castle because Beckett’s on the phone; it’s funny, but the fact that Ryan reports to him like he would to a cop also shows how thoroughly Castle has integrated into their team.

Ugh, I so know what you mean! I just about screamed at my tv…NOOO!!!! when that happened. Poor Castle.

And yes, that bit where Castle sent off his family was spectacular, especially since they had no clue what he was doing or why.

I’m so glad I wasn’t the only one to spot that little moment with Ryan and Castle. Like you said, it totally showed how well Castle has integrated into the team and how much Ryan (and everyone else) trusts him.

Nice review. Yes, as a straight female myself, I have to admit to having a girl crush on Stana Katic. But really, who doesn’t? :) Loved this episode. Nice cliffhanger. Can’t wait until next week.

LOL, well I’m glad to see I’m not the only one. Yep, I think I’m developing a girl crush on Stana as well. I’ll just add her to the list along with Daniela Ruah from NCIS:Los Angeles and a few others.

Castle can’t get better than that!!! I loved the whole first part, just awesome! You could really feel the emotions running high, Ryan and Esposito trying to send their loved ones out of town and Castle actually doing it. Although I don’t think it’s much use since the consequences of a nuclear bomb aren’t limited to the one city it goes off in. Also this episode had some other flaws (like Beckett looking surprised when they were locked in that freezer – what did she expect?!) but I still just love it!!! ;)
    Can’t wait until next week.

I found it very poignant that both Ryan and Esposito tried to send their loved ones away and how you could see in Castle’s eyes how he felt for them, since he himself had just done that with his family.

People, It’s not a nuclear bomb! it’s a DIRTY bomb. Sure there will be an explosion, but not even enough to bring a building down. The explosives just spread the Cobalt-60 (Radiation) Around, effectively making NYC an unlivable place for hundreds of years. Just look at Pripyat, near Chernobyl. It’s been over 20 years and people still aren’t allowed back there.

Yep, dirty bomb or nuclear bomb, both are still scary, even if they have different purposes and effects.

I just watched my tape of this show last night – and holy mackerel, you are right on with your review!

“Who hasn’t heard of Serenity?” Fangirl squee…. and big grin for much longer than necessary. Did I just imagine it, or did the actors also give little grins when they were discussing that?

I guess in the heat (no pun intended, believe me) of the moment, going into the freezer seemed like a good idea, but it could be they did not realize what was behind that door, or since they had few options, they chose to do it anyway. But, yeah, how many shows have we seen the same thing happen? I recall Tony and Ziva being trapped in a container on NCIS years ago.

I so love Castle – and my only wish for the show is to have some guest stars from Firefly – how awesome would that be?

I know, right?? Total fangirl squee-age at the Serenity moment.

Yep, you are so right, Tony and Ziva indeed did do the same thing a few years back on NCIS. Sure Beckett probably knew in the back of her mind that it could be a bad idea but when you’re about to be shot, you take whatever shelter there is and deal with the consequences later.

Ooooh that would be awesome! Considering how many nods they’ve given to the show (all done knowingly of course) I’m sure they would be open to it. I guess it’s just a matter of the schedules for the other actors and whether any of them have the time. As for me, I would LOVE it if Alan Tudyk would stop by. He and Nathan are so amazing together.

      • Pat

Alan would be great, but I would love to see Jewel – heck, have em all, but separate episodes, so it prolongs the squee-ing! Hey, I cna dream, can’t I? ROTFLOL……

So true! I’d love to see any of them and yes, different eps would be even better!

Overall a great episode with great tension, but I’ll be going on a rampage if they end up using the cheap “24″ cop-out of the real bad guys behind it being some white militia dudes or an equally white cabal of pseudo-Republican businessmen. That “twist” has been done to death.
