Joseph Morgan Cast in THE VAMPIRE DIARIES

Looks like THE VAMPIRE DIARIES has narrowed down their search for an actor to play legendary bloodsucker Klaus. According to TVLine.com, British actor Joseph Morgan has nearly closed a deal to play the elusive member of the Originals.

Morgan’s casting will mark the end of a months-long manhunt for Klaus. Executive Producer for the show, Julie Plec, reportedly estimated that more than 100 actors across multiple continents had read for the part. Fans had been pitching some big-name actors for the role, like Jason Dohring, Henry Cavill, and Gale Harold. But Plec hinted that they had planned to go with a relative unknown for the role all along.

Said Plec:

“This idea that there might be somebody out there that no one’s really familiar with yet that can be a new fresh face that we can exploit. in all the good ways. [is exciting]. I think our show works so well because we don’t really stunt cast.”

Although the 30-year-old Morgan’s resume consists primarily of British films and TV series, he has appeared stateside in movies like Oliver Stone’s Alexander and the Russell Crowe blockbuster Master and Commander. Morgan also starred opposite Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk in ABC’s Ben-Hur miniseries.

In other words, yet another American TV lead going to a foreign actor willing to work for peanuts. “Exploit” is the word, all right.
