30 ROCK “Operation Righteous Lightning Cowboy” Review

30 Rock "Operation Righteous Lightning Cowboy" (NBC)

30 ROCK “Operation Righteous Lightning Cowboy” Season 5 Episode 12 – There were so many things to learn from this week’s episode of 30 Rock: what happens when you hold in a snart while getting your picture taken; how to use Billie Joel’s songs in an argument to defy cameras; why reality television shows will always win out over scripted shows. This week’s episode of 30 Rock found Liz and Tracy at polite war, Jack utilizing his minions to pre-record charity tapes about anticipated natural disasters and we once again went into that cave which is the writers’ den to find out who Lutz would drive to safety in a potential post-apocalyptic world. It was, without a doubt, one of the funniest episodes ever.

Thankfully the show did not drop the killer concept of Angie Jordan’s reality show, Queen of Jordan, which is to join the ranks of other reality shows like live executions and The Real Transvestite Hoarders of Orange County Penitentiary. Unfortunately for Tracy, Angie has the cameras follow him around. Liz takes advantage of Tracy’s fix by cornering him into doing extra work, which he cannot refuse, instead of crashing two blimps into each other to see what sound they made. Climaxing with an angry Billie Joel sing off, this was one of the best storylines of the season.

It was not, however, the best of the night. Somehow, Jack Donaghy topped that with his pre-taped natural disasters segment, including a Robert DeNiro cameo lamenting: that hand gun factory, the thing that destroyed Denver, that our laughter excites the birds sexually and these super intelligent sharks. That alone deserved about ten rewinds. But Donaghy (with help from Jenna) was hit with some uber hilarious karma after a tidal wave hits an island Mago, which destroys Mel Gibson’s home. Between Oskar Gibson’s interview and Jenna’s singing plea to “help the people the thing that happened happened to” it was matched the Christmas episode’s Black Swan moment.

Best moments of the night:

Jenna threatening to “drop a D in the green room” and then sneering that “last week you thought I was crying wolf, didn’t ya?”

Lutz’s insane mirror moments.

Jack saying that the highest rated episode of Law and Order: SVU was the one where the “detectives sat around and watched American Idol.”

Tracy: I have no reason to hug her other than my love of having boobs pressed against me
Liz: If I hugged you, I would angle it so you would get no boob.
Tracy: And I would anticipate your angling and I would get there…I would get there!

The ending with Liz and Jack giving each other meaningful looks over music.

Jenna’s line about dropping a D was hilarious. She goes from 0 to crazy in .5 seconds. I wish they would give her more prominent story lines though. She tends to just pop in for a hilarious joke or two and then disappear.
