COMMUNITY “Celebrity Pharmacology” Review

Community (NBC) "Celebrity Pharmacology"

COMMUNITY “Celebrity Pharmacology” Season 2 Episode 13 - Pierce turns an anti-drug play into drugs-yay! in the “Celebrity Pharmacology” episode of COMMUNITY, but Chang turns it all around.

Oh, Pierce. You bribe Annie and do your best to get kids hooked on drugs, but your ice cold father breaks my heart. That sad commercial was very well-done and I love how much backstory we get from such a small Pierce-Annie scene. Pierce may be a self-centered ass, but he has a gooey core and I like that we see glimpses of that every so often and then have him go right back to overbearing. As for Annie, who can blame her for taking the check? Of course she would want to latch on to anyone–she believed in a Period Fairy, for goodness’ sake. Not that I don’t completely wish there were such a thing, but wow. So much about Annie is explained in one sentence, keeping the exposition from feeling clunky.

“We want drugs!” This anti-drug play is a thing of beauty, from Buzz-Bee and Bumbleton to flushing Drugs down a giant toilet, to Dean-Dong Pelton arming the kids with weapons in the form of baseballs and lusting after Cool Cat Jeff, it’s just all too awesome. Troy is just wooden enough saying his lines and Abed has some of his best reaction shots yet, and Pierce really is hilarious as Drugs.

This is an excellent Chang episode and I think it finally marks his true integration into the group. Goodness knows he survived the hazing–barely and he adds a nice edge to the group dynamic. Shirley is also terrific and I hope that we see more of these two together (not in that way) because they balance each other well and crack me up.

The Jeff texting Britta’s nephew subplot is more than a little disturbing, though Abed’s complete non-reaction to Jeff’s antics is hilarious. I love that Annie gets the closing for once, though now I’m very concerned her job will be working at Dildopolis and I have no idea what that uniform might look like.

My favorite lines:

“You don’t count, Britta. You don’t respond to anything appropriately.” Ouch, but not entirely untrue. Community‘s getting real.

“I thought drugs just made you trick out your van and solve mysteries.” And eat Sccoby snacks by the pound–don’t forget that.

“How come he gets a front stinger?” Between this, Dildopolis, and emoti-penis, we have quite the phallic-centric episode tonight.

“Save your eggs for a rainy day.”

“The next time you think about drugs, think about baseball instead.”

“I love you, Drugs!” Only Community.

“Well, that answers my question. Jeff Winger is sexy even in a coffin.” Love the look on the face of the girl sitting next to Dean Pelton and that we get shout-outs to his Furry side.

“Bring it on, Bow Wow!” Crazy Chang to the rescue.

I’m amazed at how varied the episodes of Community can be. The show is known for its big theme episodes, but an episode like this–centered around the very simple idea of an anti-drug play–is in some ways even bigger than those event episodes because so much character development happens and I don’t even realize all of it right away because I’m laughing too hard. This episode somehow perfectly balances serious character drama and subversive humor without sacrificing either.

This episode was unadulterated (lol dildopolis!) Community fun! Every aspect was hilarious ( even the creepy sexting part, if you can get past the creepy). Btw, Pierces dads name is Chevy Chases real name. I’d like to see more Shirley and Chang as well. I mean, he gave her a cassette with baby-makin music on it!! Anyways, loved it as usual, can’t wait for the D&D episode!

Nice catch on Pierce’s dad’s name–I had no idea, but I love the inside jokes.

      I can’t wait for the D&D episode, either. :)

Another inside joke/reference was when Britta suggested they call in a bomb threat to stop the play, the Community twitter page tried to get a Greendale bomb threat to “trend”. I’m thinking there might be one more but I’m not sure.
