SOUTHLAND “Code 4″ Review

Southland 'Code 4'

SOUTHLAND “Code 4″ Season 3 Episode 4 - Wow. No hints, no clues, even a semi-fakeout with Tammi being reluctant to talk about the baby and then the woman’s shrill scream in the flashforward. I was gearing up for Tammi losing the baby and Sammy being there for her, but the reality? Wow.

Nate Moretta was my favorite character on Southland; smart, funny, a bit of a flirt, but a brilliant friend, husband and father. Halfway through the episode I had a fleeting thought about whether Nate working in Gangs could endanger his family, but that was about as close as I came to actually considering him dying. Sure, there was a clean-living man with a family not unlike Nate’s gunned down in the same episode, but it didn’t occur to me that they would actually kill Nate.

But his death highlighted some of the things I love about this show. Here is the death of one of the series’ lead characters, someone who has been there since the pilot episode and is loved by fans. On other TV shows you might get a spoiler released well in advance to warn you about the death, or the episode focuses mainly on that one character, or there’s some sort of cheesy telegraphing with everyone saying ‘be careful, watch your back’ and the like. On Southland there was nothing. When a lead character died it was brutal and final – and that only adds to the realistic quality of this show.

Putting Nate’s death aside, this was a great episode. Sammy’s still having issues with Tammi and Victor, leading him to lose his temper more than once. This was starting to annoy me until the end of the episode when everything fell into place.

Lydia gets called in to help two hapless detectives on a drugs murder case. While they seem determined to just write the case off, Lydia makes some headway and, with help from an ever-vigilant Cooper and Sherman – finds the killer. But he claims that the deceased’s nephew put him up to it – a 14 year old kid with an overbearing mother. This seems like a great setup for future episodes and for Lydia in particular. Will she be able to pin the murder or drugs on ‘Gizmo’? Is his mother involved? I can’t wait to see if and how this plays out.

Sherman is still dealing with his demons from last week. Cooper thinks he’s getting too cocky. Put the two together, throw in a little bit of crazy, and you end up with some of the funniest scenes to date. I thought Cooper was being a royal ass until he explained his reasons for riding Sherman so hard at the end of the episode. Cooper’s a good guy – but surely his own issues are going to come and bite him in the ass soon enough?

I have to end the review with this: Kevin Alejandro, will you ever live through a show I like? Ugly Betty, Sons of Anarchy, Southland. At least you waited until the last episode of Gemini Division before kicking the bleedin’ bucket. Sheesh.

so surprised. geez I almost thought it was real. really is the best cop show right now. sad that he’s no longer on the show.

Yeah! show is just too damn realistic, sometimes i forget its just a bleeding show! Code 4 just left me breathless. The writers deserve real kudos. Too bad the each year Emmy winners are full of artsy show no one gives a damn about cause this show ROCKS! And deserves more credit. I wish someone takes note of the great job by the writers and actors too. Wow

Very sad episode. Nothing will send a chill down your spine like the sound of a desperate cry of loss. This show is so powerful.
If they don’t give Sean Hatosy some award recognition (after he was robbed last season), it’ll be a damned shame.

This show is too realistic,I was so into it that I was about to cry.then I remembered that it just a show (a really good one).Kevin Alejandro was one of my favorites, and when he was hit I was hoping that he would go into a comma at least there would have been hope of him been able to come back in furture episodes.I can’t wait to see the next episode.

best show on tv! and that scene has made me think what would i do if i was sammy…….would i empty my gun into the crowd? I probably would! and then reload!

  • Wishbone1234

It was heartbreaking, Nate holding up four fingers-code 4, everythings cool-& then the baseball bat. Amazing episode.

I couldn’t believe the end of this show. I had no idea it was coming until almost the end. I thought the same as you, the cry was going to be Tammi losing her baby, and then realized what it really was. I’m so sad, Nate was such a great guy. Plus I love Kevin Alejandro! Whew, I’m still blown away……

Although I love all the charaters in the show ,I’m very upset that you killed my favorite. So I will have to give great thought to continue watching the show

dam wat a great episode but wtf. Nate or his partner should have called for back-up because there were like 50 or more gang members out there. i dont get how the detectives dont wear the walkie talkies on there shoulders like the patrol cops do. he could have called called for back up a lot quicker but dam that whole scene got me pissed off. instead of shooting that one cholo in the head, i would have just shot them all. take em all out those assholes.

AMAZING episode. Truly dramatic, realistic TV. It’s the first time ever than an episode left me feeling so…affected.

Nate and Sammi were the best duo on the show and I will really miss that. I don’t know what happened to make Alejandro and the show part ways but it is sad. I kinda knew from the beginning that Nate would get killed though. Sammi’s face was beat up and his incredible acting at the hospital somehow emoted survivor’s guilt. There was some foreshadowing throughout. The dad that got killed, Nate getting mad at Sammi being so grouchy and saying “I can’t wait for this day to be over”. When the bottle hit their car I thought “Oh crap here it comes”. I will still watch but I am not happy with this. I like all the characters so it is hard to say I’d rather this or that character die but Nate and Sammi segments were consistently the best.

I thought I was the only one that thought the flashforward was about Tammi losing the baby, but so did you! This was a great episode. I was an emotional wreck at the end of it. I was shocked, angry and in tears and for a few minutes I froze. I loved Nate and I will miss him in the show.

Very good episode! As a police officer I would have to say SOUTHLAND gets really close to the real thing. I have been to many officers funerals over the years and was instantly shocked and upset how things jumped bad at the end. The desperate cry from Nate’s wife was sooo friggen real it gave me a shiver down the spine. If you have ever been on the scene of a homicide or standing in the hospital with an injured brother in blue you have had this burnt into your memory.

Wow… I had to go back and watch it again, because I was kinda relaxed, and then the POO hit the fan. Very powerful eppy, but I am sad that we lost his character because I really liked this particular pair together.. Nate and Sammi.. sigh

Great review. Agree with all your thoughts and everyone’s comments. Southland is a fantastic show and this episode is a sad but powerful reminder of that.

Great review Candice and what a shocker, although I figured out pretty early on something was going to happen to Nate because of the scene at the beginning, although at first I thought it was about Tammi and maybe Victor dying or something.

Also I had the exact same thought about Kevin Alejandro, will they stop killing him off in all the shows I like. Seriously, give the guy a break. Or maybe they just know how likable he is, so they know they will get you emotionally if they kill him off… Bastards ;)

Awesome episode, can’t wait for next week.

I was absolutely shocked and crying. I re-watched the scene a few times and it has stayed with me for 2 days. I am still shocked and kinda disappointed as Nate was by far my favourite character. The actor who plays Moretta’s partner Sammy did a terrific job in the final scenes. I was absolutely glued to my tv screen and probably had my mouth wide open with shock.

I was surprised Nate died and how he died, Its BS. Im kinda pissed about it. I contemplated if i should even keep watching the show…still am.

Great episode from one of the best police shows on TV right now. Sometimes, the show’s narrative device of presenting a flashforward gets puzzling because there’s no context to ground you. But in this instance, it worked amazingly well. Sometimes, cops don’t know how the day will end and that theme was executed well in the episode. At the beginning, we didn’t know a lot but things happened so suddenly at the end. One of the best shots was Det. Sammy holding his partner in the car while rushing to the hospital and the connection to the flashforward instantly forms in your head. Our worst fears are confirmed when Det. Sammy’s wife comes out of the morgue. Amazing job all around by the show’s creators, cast, and crew.
