Engadget reports that Opera has announced it is teaming up with Sony to put its browser, which is generally associated with mobile devices, on Sony Bravia HDTVs and Blu-ray players. The Opera browser will be offered through the Opera Devices Software Developer Kit or SDK.
There are no specific details yet as to what this will mean for Sony viewers, but the Opera browser should be able to deliver web applications, widgets, and other content that run HTML5, HbbTV and OIPF. Flash will not be available yet. Christen Krogh, Chief Development Officer, Opera Software said in a press release,
“The Web as we know it is evolving, and we are committed to making it more accessible across diverse device. Our ability to address key hybrid broadcast-broadband initiatives in numerous markets makes us a natural fit with Sony. By delivering both a global viewpoint and the necessary technology, we are able to stay on the cutting edge of the industry.”
While it was not announced when Opera would be available or on which models, it should involve the 22 new models Sony announced at CES. It is not yet known what, if any, effect this will have on Sony’s Google TV powered internet television initiative.
