THE EVENT “Everything Will Change” Season 1 Episode 10 - This week’s episode ends our The Event run for 2010, with new episodes starting on 28th February 2011. The midseason finale delivered a surprisingly linear storyline: Sean and Leila make some headway in their search for Samantha, and the USA is almost attacked with a nuclear warhead (which turns out to be a communications satellite) whipped up by Thomas, Isabelle and co.
I enjoyed this episode. If you’ve been reading my reviews for the past nine episodes, you’ll understand how strange this is. But there is a reason behind it; I’m learning to embrace the coincidences and the sheer good luck that every character seems to have. I mean, of course Sean found the keycard and knew when to use it (although, admittedly, he’s more tech savvy than the average bear). And the fire in the records room was never going to be destructive – we all know to only set fires that will singe the edges of the paperwork you wish to destroy. And heaven forbid the US government put a Google alert on each of the 97 detainee names, you know, just in case they’re used for whatever reason.
But let’s get away from that. Hands up, who knew Michael Buchanan was an alien. I thought he was for the first three or four episodes but his falling ill threw me. This revelation raises an important question: how did Michael go through the medical tests that were inevitably performed on all the Avias 514 passengers without his nature being discovered? Simon Lee needed to implant a fake vein in his arm, presumably for both shady (human blood) and practical reasons (we’re told in earlier episodes that they have a slightly different circulatory system).
Any readers want to take a guess at why Sean is important? If Leila is half-alien (or possibly full-alien – we don’t know if her mother was alien or human), it would have been a lot easier for them to kill Sean and take Leila straight to Dempsey. Why didn’t they?
We can reasonably assume that Sean was kept alive because Vicky didn’t want an innocent death on her consciousness, but that doesn’t explain why Leila was later used to lure him out. Could Sean be an alien – or the child of aliens – too? Is this all leading up to some Sean/Leila superbaby plotline? If we find out that she’s pregnant and that their future child is the saviour of the alien and/or human race, I’m going to drink myself into a coma. Fair warning.
Hi, Isabelle. I thought you would have bled to death. Nice to know you’re going to be a recurring character, but what was with having to shoot yourself? Was it a kind of punishment or were you just lucky to have survived? You’re up and about very soon though, considering this episode starts immediately after the last one.
I assumed Dempsey was trying to find a way to become youthful again, but what if he’s an alien who’s trying to look – and stay – old for some reason? It’s an out-there suggestion, but it was mentioned more than once this episode that aliens don’t seem to age. (Do they age? Do they stop aging after reaching a certain point in adulthood? Why is Sophia clearly older than Simon and Thomas? Do they just age very, very slowly? This is probably the most intriguing part of the whole series for me.)
Finally: what is the titular event going to be?
