PSYCH “Dual Spires” Season 5 Episode 12 – I only saw a few episodes of Twin Peaks back in the day and while I liked it a lot, I was never as in love with it as James Roday apparently was. In a Daemon’s TV interview James lists it as one of his favorite shows of all time and he even co-wrote this homage, along with Bill Callahan.
So there were a lot of the jokes and references that went right over my head, I’m sure of it. The thing is though, that this was still a damn fine episode of Psych. So fear not, those of you who haven’t seen Twin Peaks, I think you’ll still enjoy this episode. As for the rest of you, the ones who know exactly who the “log lady” is and why the sight of Sherilyn Fenn drinking a cherry coke is funny, you guys are gonna LOVE this episode, like a whole lot. Especially Julee Cruise singing a special slowed down, synthesized version of the theme song.
See? I told you I’ve seen enough Twin Peaks to get some of the references.
It’s hard to talk about this episode without of course mentioning Twin Peaks over and over, but I thought I should have a little something else for the rest of the audience who maybe hasn’t seen that, um, other show. To quote Shawn, this episode features a delicious mystery and there’s also some nice continuity as we get a glimpse of how Shawn and Juliette are dealing with being co-workers while still being a couple.
Also, here are a few of my (non-spoilery, of course) favorite bits.
The episode title. Get it? Dual Spires? Like Twin Peaks? Come on, you gotta admit, that’s funny stuff right there.
Shawn and Gus ride a tandem bike… and get into a bike chase with it.
Gus is a sympathetic cryer.
Waiting for corpses to surface in water is a passion on Lassie’s life.
Overall a totally fun episode that includes lots of nods to that…ahem… “other” show – like wacky characters with funny names, hilarious dialogue and unusual references. Actually, come to think of it, that sounds pretty much like any other episode of Psych.
