The rumors are true. GREYS ANATOMY has a musical episode in the works, and TV Guide talked to show creator/executive producer Shonda Rhimes about what viewers can expect. One thing we shouldn’t expect is for Meredith to stop a surgery to do a little song and dance, since Rhimes has ruled out characters singing for no reason. “I very much wanted to do something that was musical without being a musical,” she explained.
It will be a Callie-heavy episode, which makes sense since Sara Ramirez won a Tony for her work in ‘Spamalot,’ but Rhimes insisted that Callie’s story told would have happened even if the episode weren’t musical. Chandra Wilson is also a musical theater veteran, so expect Bailey to belt out a tune or two. As for the other cast members’ musical chops, Rhimes said, “You will be very surprised to discover that some people sing quite well. That’s sort of a little gift to the fans, to discover that people who are not necessarily known for singing have pretty great voices. Also, some people won’t be singing because it doesn’t go with the story.”
Rhimes wouldn’t discuss exactly which songs would appear in the episode, but she did narrow down the field. “Part of the way I figured out that we could do this was to take the songs that our show has made iconic and have them be sung by our cast members,” Rhimes explained. “We’re simply singing songs that Grey’s Anatomy has made famous.”
What do you think of this idea? Are you curious, completely turned off or somewhere in the middle? Since it’s happening, are there any songs you would want to be included in the episode? Please post in the comments.
