Some major rivals of Netflix received a boost on Monday as it was announced that subscribers to AT&T’s U-verse television package will have access to online TV shows from HBO and Cinemax. The move opens the market for HBO and Cinemax to an estimated two million AT&T customers.
AT&T’s U-verse is an internet protocol television service with some two million subscribers as of last year. AT&T customers who already pay for HBO and Cinemax will now have access to Hbogo.com and Maxgo.com. The websites allow users to view HBO and Cinemax shows online, anytime.
The move comes as good news for HBO and Cinemax as companies like Netflix and Hulu continue to gain momentum in the Web TV industry. Netflix recently announced that in the third quarter they gained 5 million more customers than in the same quarter in 2009. The parent company of HBO, Time Warner, on the other hand expects to lose nearly 1.5 million HBO subscribers in 2010.
