SMALLVILLE “Patriot” Review November 20, 2010 Reviews, Smallville SMALLVILLE “Patriot” Season 10 Episode 9 – Oliver decides to go in undercover to the Vigilante Registration Act, or, as Lois puts it, “a steaming pile of Spanish Inquisition.” It was quite a political episode with Captain Saul, sorry, I mean, Colonol Slade comparing superheroes to Hitler and Hussein, the government locking up superheroes under the pretense of defense, not to mention future-Aquaman, Arthur Curry, and his wife’s destruction of a holding facilities for superheroes. Smallville is treading plenty of allegorical waters. Aquaman’s wife Mira is impressively busty, a lucky distraction from her acting. She splits from Aquaman and Clark, who search for Oliver, who has been taken off the grid. Oliver offers to be the poster body for the VRA, but he refuses to bring other superheroes into the mix. Unsurprisingly, Slade goes to some nasty lengths to entice him to do just that. Can I just say how delighted I am to see Michael Hogan back on my screen? He was generally slimy but good in Battlestar Galactica, and here he’s gone to just good old slimy evil as he tries to break down Aquaman and Oliver. Favorite line of the night easily goes to Tess who cuts into Clark and Lois’ argument: “Sorry to interrupt Real Housewives of Metropolis.” Foreshadowing galore as Clark and Arthur mend fences and admit to trusting each other. There’s plenty of football lingo courtesy of Arthur, but both he and Mira tell share some partnering advice and encouragement to Lois. The sappiness is killing me: it’s like an episode of Oprah. Okay, my crack at Mira earlier was a little unfair. Some of her lines were just dreadful. I’d like to see Meryl Streep try them. It was a pretty flailing episode of Smallville, as if the writers weren’t sure where they were going with the VRA plot and the characters involved, though the Omega symbol in Slade’s head was an interesting revelation. The last ten minutes were wishy washy, filled with more emotional lovey-dovey clichéd lines than a Nicholas Sparks film adaptation (though I did like The Notebook. I know. I’ve lost all of your respect, haven’t I? I’m cringing myself.) Finally, Clark brings Lois to Watchtower, where she is welcomed by Tess. Finally, Clark tells Oliver, Tess and Lois of the Darkness coming. What did you think of this episode? Sound off in the comments below! When you’ve been by yourself forever, it’s hard sometimes to think of “us” and not just “me”. That’s what Clark did. He didn’t give any consideration to how Lois might have felt about him registrating. That’s a very real adjustment couples have to make. It’s no longer “me” but “us”. I liked the way the writers used AC and his wife to show that couples can work together. Since Lois wants to work with Clark, Clark got a glimpse of how that can be accomplished. The episode moved the storyline along. I know that a lot of people don’t like the VRA, but it is a way to make things move. I thought that the final season was going to be about Clark, not THEM.
