CASTLE “Murder Most Fowl” Review

CASTLE (ABC) Murder Most Fowl

CASTLE “Murder Most Fowl” Season 3 Episode 8 – Everything in this episode starts out light and funny as usual, the team going after a murderer and finding out odd little things about their victim – like the fact that he was an avid bird watcher and his nickname was “Lightbulb”.

One of the things I’ve always liked about this show is how they can go from funny to serious in the blink of an eye and when everyone realizes that the victim witnessed a child being abducted, that’s exactly what happens. The case hits everyone hard, especially Castle and I could tell that he kept thinking of what he would do in Dean’s place. When Beckett suggests they leave Dean behind, Castle is the first one to stand up for the man, knowing that a father can’t be expected to stand aside when there’s something he can do help his kid.

I like how Castle is starting to play a bigger role in the cases. He’s always had a big role on the show but it was pretty much only as the comic relief. Not that I minded of course, I mean after all Nathan is hysterical, but I like that he’s doing a bit more now. He’s not just the guy making jokes while occasionally pointing out clues, he’s now a real part of the team and I swear I’m just waiting for him to start carrying a gun instead of picking up whatever happens to be lying around as a weapon.

My favorite bits…

The word “Dude” being used to convey three separate emotions.

Martha calling the rat a “plague pusher”.

Beckett telling Castle the strangest pet she ever had was him. LOL.

Castle tasting (tasting???) the feather on the victim.

Castle saying that Lenny was cut down by “Big Bulb”.

All of Castle’s guesses at what “BHS” could stand for. My favorite was “Big Honking Stereo”.

Castle and Beckett asking “What are you talking about?” in unison.

Laughing when Castle suggested he needed to think like a rat. Oh man if Beckett had been there I know she would have had something to say about that.

Castle showing the first signs of stress when he realized how close in age the kid was to Alexis.

Castle echoing my own thoughts when he asked why a father would need a gun to kidnap his own son.

Castle’s story about losing Alexis in a mall when she was little.

Finding out that the kid had been giving them a clue to where he was when told his dad to feed “Ace”. Smart kid!

Castle’s “No chance” when Beckett suggested he stay back.

Castle using the camera on the phone to figure out what was happening in the room and then he and Becket finding the Lenny’s power box to turn off al the lights. Brilliant!

The way they shot the reunion between Dean and Tyler with no dialogue and no music, very beautiful scene.

Castle trying to make Alexis feel better and inadvertently calling her a “loser” in the process.

Ashley telling Alexis that he cared about her more than his rat.. right before Martha’s scream told them where Theodore was. LOL.

Overall a great episode with lots of drama and humor balanced well together.
