THE VAMPIRE DIARIES “Masquerade” Season 2 Episode 7 - This week I’m going to try less semi-amusing recapping and try some more actual reviewing, which is to say that I’ll give an honest review with extra added nicknames. (Oh, Hot Uncle Lockwood, we knew thee so little.)
In this week’s episode the gang try to kill Katherine, a plan that only half-works and pushes the plot forward even more than in previous weeks. The Vampire Diaries isn’t a perfect show. It’s not even the best show on television right now, if we judge it by originality and characterization, but it’s probably the best paced and executed. There are no filler moments, everything is done for a reason.
The gang trying to kill Katherine was totally the Scooby Gang 3.0 (the first being obvious, the second being the folks from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) This thought amused me so much I decided to pair up characters. Observe.
Caroline is Buffy (blonde, kickass), Bonnie is Willow (witchy), Alaric is Giles (older, wiser, kinda hot), Damon is Xander (funny, surprisingly helpful), Jeremy’s…kind of a male Dawn. Stefan has to be the brooding Angel. Comment if you have any better suggestions for the above
Anyway, armed with snazzy gadgetry, the team go into action. The Salvatores’ are wearing masks that were clearly left over from a ’90s Batman movie, while Caroline looks hot and Witchy (yes, it’s obvious, but I can’t think of a better name for Bonnie) and Jeremy make flirty eyes at each other. Did anyone else see that coming? I definitely did not. It’s kind of cute.
Side note: Did anyone else do a double take when they saw Jeremy in his suit and mask? Sorry to be so shallow, but the boy gets more gorgeous by the week!
Back to the episode: Amy and Stair Girl really have bad luck, don’t they? Amy died without having been laid by Tyler, her life’s ambition crushed – along with her spine. And Katherine got to Stair Girl too? Righty-o. I’m willing to go along with that purely because it saved Matt’s life. He’s the only human character – aside from Jenna – with no knowledge of the supernatural existing. He needs to stay around as long as possible.
“How am I going to feel if one of you gets hurt because of me?” Jeez, could Elena be anymore self obsessed? Aside from everything else, Katherine wants the moonstone. There’s at least ONE thing that doesn’t link back to Elena, and yet she’s still just thinking about how she factors into everything. Sweetie, when your little brother is more mature than you it’s time to start worrying. I really want to like Elena, but she sounds more like a bratty schoolkid every week. The only bit of maturity we really saw from her was at the end, when she decided to wait before getting back together with Stefan.
Caroline’s little act definitely had me fooled right along with Katherine. Go Caroline! The way this plan unfolded was very well done. The twist with the link between Elena and Katherine was brutal and would only have been better if it had been a natural link. It would have made Katherine being locked away at the end have even more of an effect on the viewer.
And what about that masked figure at the end? Katherine claims Elena’s in danger, but from who and what? And why? If the psychic link was still in play, we could have speculated that anyone hurting Elena would hurt Katherine. Without it we’re clueless, but I’m sure we’re all willing to wait until next week.
But before we end, let’s not forget Tyler. Oh, Tyler the werewolf. I shall name him Tywolf. Tywolf either needs help from the brothers Salvatore or he needs to learn how to deal with his changes himself. Either way, it’s a huge deal and something I hope we get to see play out in more detail than Bonnie’s magical evolution.
Overall, a great episode. With Katherine out of the way and a new big bad coming in, we’ll hopefully get to expand our focus past Stefan/Elena even more and have fun with the expanding Vampire Diaries universe.
My only issue with the show right now is the human characters. We only have Jenna and Matt who are, for the most part, completely unaware of the supernatural. There’s a fine line between making them look like the innocents that have to be protected because they don’t need to be involved with the supernatural and making them look like the schmucks who need to be protected because they can’t protect themselves. Right now, the series is somewhere in the middle, but it needs to be careful not to make humans look, to be frank, pathetic.
