THE OFFICE “Costume Contest” Review

The Office (NBC) Costume Contest

THE OFFICE “Costume Contest” Season 7 Episode 6 – Once upon a time NBC brought us a little 30 minute comedy called THE OFFICE. And it was funny. Very funny, I daresay. And the episodes would stick with you as an audience member and you’d want to re-watch them again and again. Can someone PLEASE tell me where that show went?

“Costume Contest” was… okay. It was okay… and totally forgettable. I watched the episode as it aired, and about 2 hours later turned to my roommate and asked her if we’d watched The Office yet.

So… that should tell you something.

“Costume Contest” had potential. It was FUN to see everyone dressed up, and all gunning to win that coupon book; but it just seemed like EVERYTHING was taken just a half step too far.

The opening scene with the crew and Stanley was funny up until Dwight had the tiny horse. Now before everyone says “THAT WAS THE POINT!” I REALIZE that the point was to find out how oblivious Stanley really is to things around the office – but a tiny horse? Come on.

The costumes that everyone wore were hilarious: Stanley as the samurai, Creed as a mummy (after I figured out what the hell he was), Andy as … whatever vampire from True Blood, Michael as McGruber, but then there was Gabe as Lady GaGa. Again – too much!!

And if ANYONE can tell me why Gabe would EVER dress like Lady GaGa, that’d be AWESOME. I am open to all your thoughts/opinions, because I don’t see it.

Also, I’m getting REALLY old and am not up on pop culture references; because I had NO IDEA what Ryan and Kelly (in either of her costumes) were supposed to be. So… again, if anyone could help me out with that, that’d be great.

The Jim/Pam/Danny triangle scenes were… awkward at times. I understand Pam’s motives for wanting to know why Danny didn’t call her back, but the quasi investigation into their failed relationship was too much for me.

It does seem like the writers of The Office are attempting to test us as an audience to see how we’d like Daryl as manager once Michael leaves. What do you think about this possible replacement?

So, over all “Costume Contest” was forgettable for me, but a few highlights:

  • Stanley: “How many freakin’ vampires am I supposed to care about?”
  • Angela as the nurse (but HOW out of character??)
  • Michael: “Do you know what just happened? I just made Kevin cry, and Gabe looks like Lady GaGa. That is NOT Halloween.”
  • What did you think? And can you PLEASE provide answers to my questions?

I’m pretty sure Ryan was supposed to be Justin Beiber, but then again, I’m not 12 years old so I don’t know for sure. I still have no idea who Kelly was supposed to be… in either costume.

Okay, this makes TOTAL sense as to why I had no clue. Apparently Kelly was Snookie and Katy Perry?? Who knew?

    • JJ

Ryan was Justin Bieber and Kelly was Snookie, then maybe Katy Perry.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

Justin Bieber. That explains why I had NO idea. :)

    • Crystal

Ryan is Justin Bieber and Kelly is Katy Perry in California girls video.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

You know… I THOUGHT she might have been something Katy Perry, but I wasn’t sure. Thanks!

      • Julie

Katy Perry doesn’t wear a green wig in her California Gurls video.

There was a tiny horse because Dwight owns a farm and he’s the kind of person who would bring one in, you blowhard. Was that the first time you’ve watched the show?

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

I understand that Dwight lives on a farm, I just felt that the horse was taking the gag a step too far. But hey, if you liked it, more power to you! :)

      just few words.

review sucks big time. show was just awesome. everyone on this episode were hilarious.

ps: i’ve read like 12 reviews about The office: costume party and all were very positive. this review is full of flaws. it sucks!! the office rocks.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

        Hi Rick!

I’m HAPPY other people like it – I LOVE The Office, but in my opinion, this episode was not one of the strong ones. Parts were funny, but it was a forgettable episode. If other reviewers like it, AWESOME; then I’m in the minority.

My review is just my opinion, so the flaws that you see are just differences in our opinions. Thank you for taking the time to comment; I do appreciate your feedback. :)

I agree completely; the last few seasons of The Office have just been . . . off. I’ve watched the first three seasons over and over again, but the more recent episodes I just don’t care about.

Why would Gabe dress up like Gaga? because there was a COSTUME CONTEST, its a very popular costume this year…and its a sitcom.

And did you miss Angela’s entire talking head where she talks about why she picked that nurse costume?

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

Okay… I understand it’s a costume contest, but at the same time people tend to dress like things that they’re COMFORTABLE with. I just didn’t see Gabe dressing like a woman.

And Angela as a nurse? Come on. It was over the top, regardless as to her reasoning for changing from the penguin costume she started with.

I haven’t been loving The Office since last season and almost gave up on it completely, but I kind of liked this Halloween episode. Nowhere near as good as what The Office was in its first seasons, but at least it didn’t make me cringe.

I actually thought the Jim/Pam/Danny story was funny and I totally understand why Pam would want to know why Danny never called her back.

As for Gabe as Lady Gaga, yeah that was kind of random, but kind of fun.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

It was sort of fun, but REALLY random, as well as Angela as the nurse. I can see Pam’s point of wanting to know, but I felt BAD for Danny…lol. No guy should have to go through that with a girl he didn’t call back AND her husband. AWKWARD.

I totally agree the office is no longer funny. I just rewatched it bc I couldn’t really remember much about it. I found this site searching what kelly and ryan’s cosumes were. I thought kell’s 2nd costume was willy wonka lol. She should have been slutty sesame street katie perry and ryan elmo.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

yeah, I don’t know what the deal is… something is just really off this season… aside from “Andy’s Play” which felt like old school. The Office.

Oh! and welcome to the site!! thanks for commenting, keep coming back! :)

The Office hasn’t been as good since Jim and Pam have been together I think it was the awkward sexual tension that made this show so great. But hey that’s just my opinion, Anyone else sick of the Erin character? She is just too over the top I get that she is supposed to be young naive and a little stupid but it’s just too much for my taste anyway let me know what you all think.

      • http://www.daemonstv.com/author/kelly/ Kelly

Erin is FAR too much for me to handle. I cannot take her naivety and stupidy anymore. There’s being naive and then there’s just plan DUMB and I feel that’s Erin more times than not.

I never thought about the Jim/Pam being the turning point, but you’re absolutely right! I think the two of them as friends with an obvious attraction was MUCH better than they are now… even though I was gunning for them to get together.

I agree that The Office hasn’t been as good in the past few seasons as it was in its first seasons, but you have to remember why the first seasons of the office were funny….

I always thought the reason why the office was funny was because it made the audience feel the same awkwardness that the characters were feeling. It was supposed to allow the audience member to relate to extremely awkward situations, and that awkward feelings bring humor.

It seems as though the one thing that I thought everyone found to be the humorous catch with The Office is the exact same thing that you think was wrong with this post episode. And I honestly thought that this past episode was funny because it brought back those extreme awkward feelings, especially with the conversation between Jim, Pam, and Danny. But I will agree that it wasn’t as good as episodes like those from the first few seasons.

    • siobhan

i think that you’re honestly overthinking this episode way to much.

      it’s a show.
      it’s funny.
the characters all had their motivations.

      settle down.
the horse thing wasn’t a big deal.
it’s funny that stanley didn’t notice that.

there’s some sort of weird conspiracy theory you’ve got going here.

it’s not that bis of a deal.
