CAPRICA Cancelled – It’s Official

CAPRICA

Syfy has just announced that it is cancelling the Battlestar Galactica spinoff series CAPRICA. The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2.

Syfy blames the ratings and not the quality of the show for the decision behind cancelling it. There are five more remaining episodes in the season and they will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011.

Here is what some of the stars of the Series had to say about the cancellation news on their twitter feed:

Magda Apanowicz (Lacy)- Its a sad day today! thank u 4 ALL your guys’s Love! I will for ever cherish the time on Caprica and all ways be proud of it!! : )

Alessandra Torresani (Zoe) – Its a very sad day….time for mama cylon to go cry a river! Its ok I have you lil cylons to make me smile! #caprica

Sasha Roiz (Sam) – My sincere gratitude to the fans. It was a joy to be a part of this quality show. Thank you for letting us into your home and imagination.

    Damn you, you fracken capitalists.
    You ruin everything.

    Frak!

  • Helshock

SyFy and its NBC parents have tried their best to run “Sci-Fi” into failure!! Judging excellent shows using mainstream network channel ratings on a niche channel is shows their stupidity. Just like gaming and real world shows on a cartoon network, they’ve flooded the channel with crap and deleted the really great shows.
I swear the channel would be even worse if the weekly craptacular Saturday night “bad” movie hadn’t developed a cult following.

  • Jeff

Let’s see… Caprica… Ghost Hunters… Caprica… Ghost Hunters… Is the world being taken over by MORONS? Not sure about the direction of our cultural evolution? How about this progression: Sci Fi… SyFy… SyFy with pro-wrestling. WHAT?! Tell me it’s all part of a spooky halloween thingie.

  • Elrod

Have to agree with “Helshock”. Caprica is just hi9tting it’s stride, story-wise; just getting really interesting.
I’ve never understood why they didn’t try to have GOOD programming on Sci-Fi, and with the change to” SyFy, they’ve seemed determined to eliminate as many speculative fiction fans as possible. Wht is WWE wrestling doing on there????!!!!

  • The

ScFy frak you and ur dumb ghost shows. Wrestling on SyFy. Awesome job programming staff. Way to keep the integrity of what u do high.

    I

  • kemo

I blame NBC they are the biggest diaster of a Network ever. the marketing was horrendous. People in suits should be fired big time!

  • Rich

It’s official… SyFy Network is a waste of satellite bandwidth; nothing at all left worth watching!

  • Carl

If they had scheduled it on Friday even at the same time I think the ratings would have been better. Putting it on on Tuesday is just too late for people that have to work the next day. Yeah, I watched it, but on my DVR the next day and spun past all the commercials.

So are they going to replace this with more episodes of Ghost Hunters or something equally brain dead. SyFi is no longer SiFi in my book. And that stupid moronic wrestling show. People really watch that stuff? And it’s not even SiFi.

    Frakin idiot’s.

    • Chinarider38

I’m with you Carl. It was on at 10 p.m. Some of us have to get up and work. I can’t believe that the stinking wrestling is being aired another season. They are INSANE. Don’t the people of “SciFi” remember what that means. They should fire all the top idiots and listen to the fans for a change. Science Fiction channel!!! and, put the good shows on at 8:00 !!!!

  • Loretta

i will cancel my SYFY subscription immediately. you did not give the show a chance…..

  • Robot B9

A shame really. I may now have to use sleeping pills to get a good hights sleep.

With horrible programs like Caprica & Ghost Hunters the end of the SyFy network (what a stupid name!) is near!

  • http://www.iMakeGames.com VDeCampo

WTF! Why are the best shows always cancelled? What’s next? SGU? This is why I have to go to BBC America to see good “SyFy”! They would have cancelled Doctor Who in season one if it was up to those stupid Neilson ratings that are stuck in the 1980′s.

WE DON’T JUST WATCH SHOWS VIA TV ANYMORE MORONS!

  • Dsp

I know I’m just echoing others, but this crap is really starting to tick me off. They canceled the Invisible Man, Farscape, totally screwed up SG-1 in the end… And what the hell happened to Doctor Who? I have to watch it on BBC America now and pay extra for it rather than having it on SciFi, which is usually part of a basic cable package. And then the totally inappropriate for ‘scifi’ shows (wrestling??? That one still puzzles me). Then they changed their name, which is probably good, since it really isn’t scifi anymore. Caprica wasn’t great, but it was better than almost all the rest of their ‘original’ programming. I would much rather see it than wrestling or a crappy B movie. SciFi Friday was a staple of my existence for years (as sad as that sounds). I didn’t watch TV during the week because I was working, but SciFi Friday was my ‘must see’ TV. Now that I have a DVR, I record those shows (and fast forward through the commercials, too). Please for the love of God, bring back the ‘SciFi’ niche network that has millions of loyal fans who literally LIVE for the stuff. You will never find more loyal fans than SciFi fans. That was its original premise and it should STILL be the premise. Create another channel for the rest of the crap and offer it up to Dish Network or something. Don’t give me crappy Saturday night movies. If you’re going to do that, at least make them MST3K re-runs so I can get a more cerebral laugh out of it. If you really want to make the channel what it should be, Saturday nights should have movies like ‘Let the Right One In’, ‘Night Watch’ and ‘Day Watch’, ‘Primer’… Movies that are very good, but not ones you will see on any other channel. THAT is what ‘must see TV’ is.

  • Aleric

I knew this was coming. Caprica was a good show with awesome potential. No TV exec could allow it to live. Frak it. We need a SciFi channel not a Siffy channel, whatever the hell siffy is.

  • dave

It is to bad the show was just getting going and had the chance to be great and to really get deep. First it was Farscape, then Stargate, then Stargate Altantis, the BSG. Now with Caprica gone, and other than a glimmer from Stargate Universe there is no more reason to watch the Syfy channel. Why do they kill shows before there time?

  • dave

    • Dsp

I notice no one has mentioned Sanctuary. If an original show absolutely had to go, THAT one should have been it. I gave it a chance, but the cast still looks like a bad rehash of the SG-1 group and the rest of it is so cheesy that it should be on MST3K (if someone was still doing MST3K). The sad thing is, I’d STILL watch it over ‘reality’ TV, any one of the CSI type shows, or lawyer shows, or cop shows, or anything about housewives that really don’t do anything in their house, and DEFINITELY over wrestling shows and shows about ghost hunting that actually invite those housewives on as guests. Seriously. If you have to bring on ‘guest stars’ every week, the show is crappy. And if you have to bring on ‘reality’ ‘guests stars’…. do I even have to say it?

  • kelley

It’s a shame that the Sci-Fi (used to be about sci-fi) would cancel great programming, with a plot, character development, and a great story arch-in order to broadcast absolute drivel like ghost-hunter shows and the stupid Stargate series. Cable TV sucks in general and this just tops the cake.

    • Dsp

Actually, I really thought SGU was going to suck, but I have to admit that, even though it’s not as good as BSG or Farscape or the original SG-1, it’s at least watchable and it’s grown on me a bit (even though I still feel like it’s a feeble attempt to do BSG in the SG universe). Caprica was definitely just starting to get interesting…

  • Scott

Why does this not surprise me? Imbeciles are running Sci-Fi, SciFy, All Star Wrestling, what ever they want to call themselves. Same reason you can see more Star Trek show on any channel but Sci-Fi! What the Frak, you Frakin Fraked up Frackers!

Time to get your heads out of your butts and get a little oxygen to the brain!

  • Scott

its just their way of making sure we won’t have anything to miss if the world does end in 2012!

  • MM

The last episode is the first that really made me think we are getting somewhere. No more teen games.
It is not to say I didn’t wait to see every episode but….

  • NickF

I am going to disagree with other comments here. The show was too much a tragedy. It was too dark and not enough good guys to keep people interested. Extremely edgy which didn’t allow for a broad enough audience. Not enough hope or happy endings don’t make for good story. The most successful shows always have a happy resolve or moral salve at the end. You may disagree but it’s true.

    • Jaim

I have to disagree. House M.D. for the first five seasons had mostly tragic finales and character arcs but it is still a very successful show. In addition, Dexter which is always a dark and edgy show is very popular as well. Of course, people like happy endings but it seems that this isn’t the only thing people are after anymore. Caprica was really getting into some interesting storylines these last few episodes and now we will never know how this could have developed.

    • Helshock

That’s the point! Its Sci-Fi. Its Edgy. Its on a niche channel. NOT for the “mainstream”. If you want happy endings, watch CBS, ABC, or NBC. As someone else stated, SciFi fans are rabidly loyal, interested, critical and when possible, they bring friends. But the execs want the mainstream – which they wont get here. Good luck dragging the “Real Housewives” crowd to SyFy.

  • perryrants

    yeah

    more wrasling

  • spuds

Frak. I miss BSG and now my fix is gone. Bring on B&C fast.

  • http://www.KmCo.us nate trask

Caprica was the second best show on Syfy… like the other people pointed out, ghost hunters and wrestling?.. really?.. if syfy will no longer play sci-fi related shows, they should just change the network all together and give up the name of the network…

    Frak syfy, and Frak nbc…

  • Michael

This is very disappointing. I agree with the others who have said there is virtually no reason to watch or care about SyFy. I think all of us who care should let our providers know that we no longer need this channel. I also agree that the excellent shows like Farscape are missed and that Ghost Hunters and Wrestling are irrelevant to SciFi aficionados. So sad…

  • Marc

I am seeing a lot of shows being cancelled by Syfy (SciFy).
To be honest, I am totally Fracking sick of it.
Seems to me, the corporate morons are only looking for big cash cows, and when the cash does not rush in immediately they go for the jugular.

I am also sick of hearing “A movie” will explain the series end…

Syfy needs to get their Azzes out of Wrestling.
And out of Rediculous Ghost hunting…
and back into real science fiction.
(Not saying Wrestling is not good, its just NOT what we want to see as SciFi Fans.)
And honestly, I have no interest in ghost hunting…

The biggest problem with Stargate Universe, Battlestar Galactica, and Caprica is they all want to look and feel the same.
They are really dark, and hard to “get into” unless your a dedicated fan.
My advice, — cut back on the dark, claustrophobic sets…
Stop WHINING about lack of “viewing” for the shows that are clearly popular.
Whoever is doing the “budgeting” and hiring… needs to fire himself… cause they are clearly not doing a good enough job to keep great shows running.

  • Marc

PS, i did not even read the comments until after I posted, and AMAZINGLY they all are saying the SAME THING.
Clearly, the only people NOT listening, not caring… is Syfy

  • Christian

I feel like they don’t even care. It doesn’t even matter what I write here. I thought Caprica was a great show. Where BSG was dark and followed a society just trying to survive, Caprica followed a society that was drunk on technology. The show was visually beautiful. I would argue there isn’t anything like it on tv. I was excited to see what the colonies were like and while the characters were sometimes dark, they seemed human. It wasn’t a teen pop show. Rather it showed real characters with real flaws. You could tell that a lot of thought went into each scene. All that is left now is SGU, but they’ll cancel that too. When that happens I’m done with this channel. And I’m not even excited about the BSG spin off following a younger Adama. I don’t even care. How boring. Those characters had their time. We followed them to finding a new home and then we closed the book. Its just another bad decision.

  • Ron Broomfield

This is very sad. It is not very often that an intelligent syfi show comes along. Caprica was such a show. I looked forward to each episode and hoped it would run for several seasons. This was a great spin off of a greater series. Proof once again that the people in control have no eye for real creative talent. All they care about is money. True syfi fans will have to look elsewhere for well written material. Time for a competitive alternative.

  • Peter

This is the best Sci Fi show I have seen in at least 5 years… they definitely didn’t give it enough of a chance. It makes me wonder if they factor in Hulu ratings into the show’s overall ratings.

I can’t believe they are cancelling it! And on top of that, pushing back the airing of the last episodes!

  • liz

i dislike syfy in general but when i saw caprica i was addicted! i think it is very selfish of the people to cancel it. it may have not been super popular but what about the few that were enjoying it. i think they should continue filming whether its making money or not you cant just finish season one and than cancel a week till the next season starts and leave people wondering what happens that is just plain wrong.

  • Dave

    CRAPrica! Good riddance I say.

  • Rick

NBC Screws up everything it touches. They’ve f’d up their station, no suprise they cancel another quality series on another. The mangement needs to be fired!!!!

  • Trent

    I blame SyFy for this!

It’s hard to capture an audience on anything they show when they keep showing two episodes then go on a six month hiatus!

  • Jozinho

Typical NBC (but they’re not alone!). A show doesn’t draw in smash ratings straight away and it pulls it. I can understand why they’ve done it, just gutted. This show had the potential for sctors to develop the same camrardary as the BSG cast. I know I was practically giddy with excitement at the chance to actually see on screen the whole lead-up to the Cylon wars and how the Cylons actually grew as a race. We all know the back story…but it’s just not the same as then seeing that on screen.

Perhaps if we all watch re-runs, buy the DVDs, help boost merchandise sales, get kids into BSG so they then want to watch Caprica it may make a comeback.

Any chance of another network picking up the programme and financing it? Or are NBC going to keep the cake they’re not letting us eat????

  • liamo

Delighted – Truely delighted – Caprica and its spawnmaster BSG were a blight on our screens, with their dire religious undertones – Glad to see the back of them… both

  • nicole

Sick to death of series being cancelled

Absolutely no point trying to get into a series nowadays. Lets face it BSG was a rushed end due to the writers strike or “whatever”, caprica dies after one season…. I really liked legend of the seeker – that was axed after two.

I am worried about SGU :-(

If V gets past season 2 I will be amazed.

    Sigh.

  • nicole

not to mention SG1, Stargate atlantis……. and of course the “movies” that are being made instead of the series are err “on hold” etc.

There are established brands to, what chance has something new.

Boring – gonna stick to wrasling. ho hum

  • tom

The show was in a word boring. Nothing happened,EVER? They acted like they had all the time in the world and took it.

I wanted more of the Robots and instead got plot lines that put me to sleep.

Hopefully in the future shows will remember there has to be a hook. That and SyFy needs more time slots for stupid ghost shows and wrestling..

  • Rick

What needs to get canceled are the contracts with this networks so called “executives”. Taking a year to air 18 episodes of a series (including a 6 month intermission) and then wondering why the ratings are low speaks volumes about the lack of common sense in the boardroom.
The cancellation of this series to make room for even more computer generated “pathetic excuse for movies” just proves my point.
It’s going to be “BYE BYE SYFY” if someone there doesn’t wake up.

  • CPRCA

And so, it’s good-buy to SYFY, until they show the rest of it next year, and then… for good! It was the only thing worth watching on TV.

  • Matt

    Frak! Frak! Frak! Frak!

I was really looking forward to the build up of the first cylon war.

    FRAAAAAAK

  • Darrell

Absolutely ridiculous. Seriously, in this day and age, there needs to be a better way of measuring how the ratings work. With good shows like Terminator: SCC and Caprica getting cancelled in their second season because of “ratings” is ludicrous. With people watching television on their computers or PVRs, both of which I hear are not followed by the system, the ratings are of course going to not be as high as they would have been ten years ago.

This is not cool. There really needs to be a system revamp in how the survival of amazing shows are determined.

  • Mary Thomson

That is horrible news, this is such a well done show, the characters are interesting and fun to watch, the show is filmed so well and to not show us the last 5 remaing episodes until 2011 is just not fair to the loyal viewers.

The actors like Eric Stoltz and Scott Porter will be missed.

  • Bryan

I truly feel like I have been punched in the stomach by “Syfy”. I knew when SciFi changed to Syfy that the end of the network was coming. Then they added Wrestling to the network and it was painfully obvious that anything that was thoughtful would be gone sooner than later. Here we are, the most thought provoking series on the network and it has been canceled. It was my favorite series currently airing. So long SciFi… we’ll miss you.

I feel very saddened by these events.

  • Art

Typical NBC/SYFY decision. The dumbing down of a network. We should have all seen this coming with the renaming SciFi to SYFY. “Caprica” is a great show that deserves to continue. But the fact that there is now wrestling and “Ghost Hunters” truly shows where the programming is going…

  • evil pirate ned

this is crazy, Caprica’s story line had just started to fill out and pick up. “syfy” has really gone down hill lately. btw, we are sick of the stupid ghost hunters shows. why dont you try catering to your lifelong fan base instead of alienating us by making junk shows to bring in the mainstream.

  • Kevin Jones

Great job SYFY…fracking morons…really…the show was just really picking up steam and getting a lot of us hooked…NO WRESTLING!!!!!! NO GHOSTS>…c’mon…try harder

  • John

    Caprica Cancelled?

    Why are you doing this?

It’s the only show I watch on SYFY, and it has meaning to me.
I am suffering from colorectal cancer and am going to be undergoing surgery in the near future. I may not make it because the surgery is very risky. I was looking forward to seeing the progression of the Cylons development as a people who were at one point human. This series gives people something they can relate to in our present world. The Galactica series that was, had such acclaim that as you know, gained the attention of the United Nations. I think that David Eick and Ron Moore are true prophets who see upcoming political and religious events in our human society. I think you are afraid of seeing the truth in what they are telling in their stories. Their stories are real parables of what will (not could) happen if we continue on present course of advancements in our sciences, technologies and social developments. This series, CAPRICA, had what I saw as a progression and building up to extreme events that to cut it off now is sickening.
Why are you leaving those of us watching the show hanging on where it was going?
Maybe you should make scripts for people to read online. I won’t be watching anything on SYFYat this point, as I don’t care for shows that don’t have much character development or are just violent presentations.
    My name Is John Rigo
And I think you are making a big mistake in cancelling this wonderful series CAPRICA
    Thank You

  • Jeff

DUMB MOVE, Siff-fee. Almost as dumb as the name change. They’ve lost me as a viewer – which isn’t so bad, since Caprica was now the only show on their channel that I actually watched. Go ahead and continue to make shows with terrible writing, and support the worst movies ever made. Idiots.
