CAPRICA Cancelled – It’s Official

CAPRICA

Syfy has just announced that it is cancelling the Battlestar Galactica spinoff series CAPRICA. The remaining first run episodes of Caprica – airing Tuesdays at 10/9c – will be removed from the schedule as of next Tuesday, November 2.

Syfy blames the ratings and not the quality of the show for the decision behind cancelling it. There are five more remaining episodes in the season and they will be re-scheduled to air at a to be announced time in the first quarter of 2011.

Here is what some of the stars of the Series had to say about the cancellation news on their twitter feed:

Magda Apanowicz (Lacy)- Its a sad day today! thank u 4 ALL your guys’s Love! I will for ever cherish the time on Caprica and all ways be proud of it!! : )

Alessandra Torresani (Zoe) – Its a very sad day….time for mama cylon to go cry a river! Its ok I have you lil cylons to make me smile! #caprica

Sasha Roiz (Sam) – My sincere gratitude to the fans. It was a joy to be a part of this quality show. Thank you for letting us into your home and imagination.

What do you think of the news of CAPRICA being cancelled? Do you feel like it wasn’t given enough of a chance. Sound off below.

Such a shame, Such a GOOD show, echoes of Firefly and American Gothic, also cancelled before their time.
Shame on you NBC (SyFy parent company) for doing this, it is/was the ONLY t.v show I watched/awaited on a regular basis, now see no need to continue renting cable t.v!!

  • Rich

    ARGGGGG!

  • Rayn

Caprica is an amazing series that wasn’t even given a chance! It not only held up to originality of it’s predecessor, “Battlestar Galactica,” in that it’s plot is being imaginitive and intriguing, but the possibities for developing story lines are seemingly endless. I haven’t seen a show this good in a long time, and I guess I won’t be seeing it that much longer. Apparently you just can’t gain traction on TV unless your idea is so formulaic and homogenized that it’s worthy of a station like Fox. I’m very disappointed to see this show go, and believe that Syfy needs to pull their heads out of their asses.

This news is horrible! Caprica is the only series my family [wife, 20 year old boy, 14 year old boy, and I] will watch – we enjoy it enormously [although I didn't like the episode where "sweet" Zoe got brutalized]. I hope there is a rethinking of this decision, because it is a great show that will be sorely missed by us. Maybe I’ll take syfy off of my favorites like I did NPR after the Juan Williams sacking!!!

  • Silvio

Well what a surprise….NBC yet again canceling a brilliant science fiction show just as it was getting interesting. Let them go back to crummy (FAKE) ghosthunters and cheesy really badly done movie of the week. No reason to even watch TV anymore.

  • FS

C’mon!!! Are you serious? This was the first good — no AWSOME — show I’ve seen on television in two years!

Don’t cancel it, please. You have to give it a chance to mature, for people to hear about it!

  • Mark Sanders

It was a mistake to air the new season 2 Caprica episodes on Tuesday evenings…how stupid is that. A series of such quality should have been scheduled on Friday or Sunday evenings to maximize the opportunity to capture a larger audience. It takes more than providence for a new science fiction series to work even when it’s a dovetail to an earlier success story. I hope someone at SyFy has the balls and/or sense to bring it back, and at least let it play out with smooth finality.

  • Mac Ross

I’m disappointed. I looked forward to Caprica every week. Loved the cast.

    Is Eurika next?

  • CBZ

Caprica should NOT be cancelled. We need to rally NBC and let them know that this is a quality show and deserves its chance to blossom. It was clear from the beginning that the intricate plotlines were not going to develop overnight. SyFy and NBC must reconsider their options otherwise TV will be flooded with programming no one will watch or get involved in. There are tons of ways that this show can be marketed better (put on a different night, online components, etc.) that will not break the bank for the network.

    SO SAY WE ALL.

  • Robert Warren

NOOOOO! I rate this as one of the better sci-fi series I have ever watched. I was immediately entranced by the Gibson-esque iconography; it came so very close to matching the future as I imagined it when reading books like Neuromancer and Mona Lisa Overdrive, especially when characters jacked into the matrix using holobands to enter VR land. God, just when I decided to let myself fall for that cute Zoe… what in the world will I do now? Seriously though, I can’t tell you how disappointed I am that a show that paid so much attention to SF detail like this is no more – I really hope it gets a second chance…

    • http://www.kennedyroelaw.com capmotion

I agree with all of that except one point; I started to fall for cute Zoe in the first episode! I loved seeing the old Citroens and Checker Cab too! This is really a monumental mistake, and a rude assault on the syfy audience.

    • Robert Warren

And I forgot to add what a great job I thought Eric Stoltz did with his character – had me enthralled every time he was on screen…

  • David Knowles

It had great protential, but it should of be set much nearer to the the war between the Cylons an Humans.
An it should of explored the other colonies much more instead of the being Caprica central.
An it was poorly thought out.

    Lack action an compelling plots.

    • http://www.kennedyroelaw.com capmotion

Gosh, you didn’t have to watch it, you know.

  • Owen

I think that Caprica being cancelled is bloody ridiculous. TO be honest i’m getting sick of SyFy cancelling good Sci-Fi shows because they dont have 10billion viewers by the 4th ep. Let’s be honest, Sci-Fi is never going to draw the massive ratings of other networks but it’s fans should still be given what they want!!

  • Ari

Everyone should let ‘syfy’ and nbc know of their displeasure by sending them a (not too nasty) comment here, enlist friends to do likewise: feedback@syfy.com

  • Dsp

Regardless of how much I liked or disliked Caprica, it was at least SciFi. I never got the Eureka bug (not that it’s a bad series, I just didn’t get hooked) and don’t watch it, but I want it on the air because it is SciFi. Haven isn’t spectacular, but I watch it because it’s SciFi and it’s a bit different. It just breaks my heart that so many SciFi shows are hacked before their time, yet Law and Order and CSI go on and on and on and on and set in different cities just to add to the franchise when their plots and cast are so boring and cookie cutter, yet something like Firefly, which was so different and so compelling gets axed before it can finish a full season. My parents don’t like SciFi, but they loved the ‘old west’ element of Firefly. It just didn’t get enough time for people to discover it. Do they not get how much money SciFi fans spend on things like ‘action’ figures, DVDs, etc? If you put them on Friday night rather than moving things to Tuesday, I’d actually watch them live with commercials rather than recording them on the DVR and skip the commercials. How much fan fiction is out there for non-scifi shows compared to SciFi shows? Some of us purchased DVRs and satellite contracts just to be able to watch Doctor Who on BBC America. I seriously don’t understand the logic in any of it. Further, I know I live pay check to pay check right now and the economy isn’t good, but it’s quite obvious that there are no SciFi fans at NBC or SyFy. SciFi fans should OWN that channel. Hell, if they would make the channel what it is SUPPOSED to be, I’d buy shares. It would be a proud part of my investments. Could someone buy SciFi from NBC and do the right thing by it and its fans? I wish I had the cash. I’d do it in a heartbeat and wipe out the board of directors and put people in who understand both SciFi and SciFi success…. Why aren’t Spielberg and Lucas and others helping to keep this channel a float? They don’t have to make anything, new, they just need to be there to help it along. Where is the disconnect? Is it because of NBCs ownership? It can’t be because there aren’t passionate, loyal SciFi fans out there. Robot Chicken, Family Guy both had their ‘Star Wars’ specials and they were spectacular! My brother doesn’t necessarily care for SciFi like I do, and he never watches animated shows, but when I showed him those episodes/specials, he LOVED them. They are part of our culture, our childhood, and many of our pop culture references. Hell, they even named a cell phone after a Lucas film trademarked term and it’s selling out more than the iPhone. Someone is just not getting it. SciFi sells more than anything else, especially over the long term. Why can’t they connect these obvious profit boosters to current SciFi?

  • Deborah Woodley

The canceling of Caprica is yet another example of how chicken stations are. Cheers, one the most successful series of all time, had lousy 1st and 2nd seasons.

Caprica is a quality show, with good writing and great performers.

This is also a testament to the way stations and programmers view the public, with no respect, no feelings for providing loyal viewers with notice and closure.

    This truly sucks.

I agree that NBC should be ashamed. You did this to us with “Heroes”, too.

  • Gary Lacey

Hey great! Now they can fill that void with cheap garbage. I now have fewer reasons to watch SyFy and NBC.

  • Maw

So I’m sitting down tonight to watch the only show I don’t want to miss and as I am catching the end of Stargate universe I go set the DVR to record Caprica as I am watching it, but I can’t find it. In Caprica’s usual time slot I see Star Trek; I’m thinking what the Frak. So I scan ahead thinking it’s on another day or that it’s a two hours special that was scheduled for next week but I can’t find it. I becoming more frantic and started searching the internet to find out why it’s not on thinking was that the end of the season already, but no I find out that it was cancelled, so again I’m thinking what the Frak, and I’m getting pissed which I really don’t over a T.V. show, I am disappointed that this show was cancelled since it was really the only one on the Syfy channel that I watched, because let’s face it WWE is fake with no real Scfi Point, I never understood why it was on the Syfy channel to begin with, and Ghost Hunters has lost it’s edge maybe because they have never really found anything. Scare tactics, WCG Ultimate gamer and Destination truth is not scfi. Again I am Big time disappointed that Caprica was cancelled when it had so much scfi potential for the suppose to be Syfy channel.

    • jimash

      Me too.

  • Micheal

    What the “Frack”

  • Camerajockey

This is ridiculous!! Hey Syfy why would you put Caprica on Tuesday night? I mean geez, some of us have real jobs that we have to get up early to go to. Put Caprica back on Friday night and we’ll show you how the ratings will fare!!! Bring Caprica back to the people.

    • Cheryl Salvati

That could work, PLease return our show to us….

  • Ari

How anyone can state that sci-fi is a ‘niche’ genre is beyond belief, when Avatar grossed more than any other movie ever made, despite the nay sayers, where star wars is close behind, Star Trek was popular even way back when and ‘next generation’ had an avid loyal worldwide following, when Battleship Galactica had praise upon praise heaped upon it from the get go!! No my friend, Sci-Fi is mainstream, here to stay, and (at times) wonderful!!
Caprica was probably too expensive for ‘Sy Fy’ to maintain, so they put it on late at night on a ‘mid week’ eve so they could drop it with the excuse that it didn’t have a large enough following.
My current ‘billing cycle’ on my cable box ends on Oct. 27, I shall be returning it before then, Caprica was the only reason I kept it, that and all the other really good programs sy-fy abandoned, nothing worth watching any more.

  • http://www.cinemalicious.com Joe Bodia

Wow, what a complete bonehead maneuver on behalf of NBC… this show was subtle, intriguing and if they complain of ratings, it’s because they are stuck in the 90s and don’t know how to measure exactly how many people are actually watching off the metered tube.

And once again, american tv goes down a notch. Thank goodness there’s still someone with brains like MadMen and BBC’s quality content.

    BRING BACK CAPRICA!!

    JB

  • Richy

It is a disgrace that Caprica was cancelled. Perhaps it was too intellegently written and drew too many frightening parallels. But that’s okay Sci-Fi(SyFy?)executatives, as long as the really great shows like Hollywood Treasure don’t get cancelled, Caprica fans can still have something to look forward to. Personally, I just shiver with anticipation, wondering what will be auctioned on next week’s episode.

  • Cheryl Salvati

It’s terrible that the show is cancelled, I was just getting into where the story was going. Honestly I do not understand the low ratings except to consider that “men” and Boyz” have to have shoot-em ups all the time to be happy. The Plot is great, the story line-engaging, well written, mature and thought provoking. I seee that well written movies and television tend to have low ratings. Sad to think intelligence equals “Boring”

  • andrew

sorry people but its happening to lots of scifi shows because people are being to elitest. they tear apart good shows because they try and increase the drama to bring in new fans. hard core fans need to start to realize if they want quality shows they need to allow networks to bring in different types of fans. stargate universe is dieing because of the old fans who dont like the new style and wont give it a chance. sarah conor chronicles had the same problem the old terminator fans couldnt deal with a few new concepts and tuned out. well guess what happens then….. u get no shows and just a crappy movie every 5 years ….guess what star gate fans thats what is happening to you and and all ready hase happened to caprica. we are killing or own shows bye stealing them on the internet and by not supporting the live broadcasts of good new shows. shame on us all and blame me for caprica cause i was one of those people who didnt give it the chance cause i figured i could catch up on the internet and now its over…. tune into stargate universe and maybe we wont lose that one as well

  • http://visualArtistPhillipFulgham Phillip

Caprica was one of the finest and most intelligent TV programs to come along in decades…I’ll not watch BSG or any of the other tripe you air , like Fact or Faked …etc. what a bunch of crap…if I wanted reality TV I’d watch FOX or some other crap! SYFY is no longer on my program selection list…what a bunch of losers you programming jerks are…did any of you ever even watch the program…idiots the lot of you. I have cancer and have waited patiently for the return of the program and then suddenly it is not there…well neither will I and many of my friends…so long and may your budget waste awaaaaaaaaaaay!

  • Ari

Philip, you need to write to NBC/Syfy to rant about the cancellation, this list is not that/them but an ‘independent’ list that allows us to air out views to ‘other people’. take care, and send syfy your thoughts, as I did.

  • Matt

Worst decision ever. FRAK the guys at SyFy. They wouldn’t know a good tv show if it shat in their lap.

  • http://none David Battersby

My wife and I can not believe this show is canceled !!! We love it and thought it was quite popular. Just a thought, like many people we have busy modern lives. When we watched Caprica it would be on-demand or dvr. I wonder if these viewing methods count in the ratings ?

  • Trent

Networks will cancel TV shows even though they have enough ratings to make them money for various reasons.

CBS cancelled the popular series “Gomer Pyle” despite its high ratings. It was no longer the type of viewer who watched it they wanted to attract to their network for the purpose of advertising.

Now SyFy seems to want to try their new Adama series, I guess for more action.

I too will miss it. I never expected Alessandra Torresani to look so good in those skin-tight leather pants.

  • Neelie

This was the only show I looked forward to every week. Feel like the rug has been pulled from under my feet. Such a shame that a quality program such as Caprica has been cancelled. Like others I feel that syfy did not give it enough time. Also moving the night to Tuesday wasn’t the best of ideas

  • Pat

It took a while to start, but this was needed to give the show all its punch to come. As it’s becoming an incredible show, SyFy cancels it. Yes, a premature and very unfortunate decision.

  • Dave Holtzclaw

Syfy spends plenty of $$ producing crappy first run films airing almost every Saturday but can’t spend the $$ to keep a 1st rate show like Caprica. I think if they had continued the series into the Cylon Wars it would have really taken off. They were way to quick to pull the plug. They’re starting to act like one of the big3 networks. Instead how about doing us all a favor and pulling the plug on your low budget Sat movies?

  • Rich

As a fan of the Battlestar Galactica remake I thought this series was a terrible idea, however, it turned out to be a well constructed, thought provoking and visually impressive prequel to BG and had potential to run for several seasons.

Unfortunately, science fiction tends to be fairly expensive to produce and when offset with low ratings, cancellation is inevitable.

Hopefully we’ll get some sort of story closure in the final episode or perhaps flashbacks in the forthcoming sequelprequel Blood & Chrome.

Ultimately, one series in better than none and thanks to all the people involved that gave us this enjoyable series!

  • Phillip

In the past, in the evenings, I would always ck SyFy 1st before deciding what to watch…now I do not even ck the channel at all…If I wanted to watch Wrestling and various other mind numbing junk I can go to local channels…this series however, really did explain lots of questions I had ZXYLONS?(sic)…but now I am through I have not watched ONE program on SYFY since the cancellation of Caprica…and do not plan on returning any time soon…I’ve numerous work associates ( and we all considered this the weekly highlight ) that feel the same…so long SYFY (SCI-FI) channel I’ve better things to watch than the cheap crap you are now producing…

  • David

Caprice – what a really great show! Very high quality writing, directing and acting. Poor ratings were the result of poor advertising. The package was excellent. The mail system that delivered it (Syfy’s advertising) needs overhauling!

  • david

BRING IT BACK OR I WILL NEVER WATCH THE STUPID SCFY CHANNEL IF THE CANCEL CAPRICA AND SG-U I WILL SHOOT MY TV

  • Trent

Now I have just learned SyFy has cancelled Stargate Universe.

    It’s time we cancelled SyFy

    • Dsp

      WHAT?!!
Ok, that’s it. It’s good they changed their name to SyFy. It means bloody nothing and at least SciFi is still SciFi and the name is no longer sullied…. Does anyone know when that name can be used again as a TV network? There has to be someone with a crap load of dough that could start up a real scifi network….
      Lucas? Speilberg? Bueller?
Do you think we could get Joel McHale to at least flame them very publicly on The Soup?

  • Trent

A name in Trade Mark is only good while it is used in Trade.
In a nutshell, NBC has abandoned the name “SciFi Channel” or “SciFi” in trade for television. At this time, anyone can start a new TV channel and name it SciFi channel.

    • Dsp

      Sweet!
Now we just need the money….

    • Trent

you really don’t need much money.

With IPv6 coming online, it supports true multicasting of media.
With that, you could easily broadcast a television quality video without the need for super high bandwidth.

Even broadcast it to other carriers such as cable and satellite.

    • Dsp

Yea, but you still need the money to produce the shows…. that’s really the root of the issue with the current ‘network’… enough money to make the shows AND profit.

    • Trent

Does not really cost much to produce simple shows like Mystery Science Theater 3000 which was another hit they cancelled.
Probably the most expensive part would be getting license to boradcast those old movies.

  • turbe

why it can. they just had to keep saying ( god )told me to do it!!

    • wtg sydyots

Well there you have it, Syfy takes the only decent SCIENCE FICTION world out there and decides to cancel it before it gets a start.

To be fair the episodes were a bit drawn out but still better than anything else out there.

  • Jaaltobelli

i loved it. wonderful production. please bring it back.
    more fans like me.

  • Tvadvokat

sifi programming staff have holes in their heads and all the grey matter flew out the window.. can another network please take on this seriously imaginative / amazing show.. for the love of good TV!!!

  • Daniel Bashstone

The cancellation of Caprica is one of the biggest crimes against sci-fi I’ve ever seen. It’s frightning that such an amazing show can be axed after a season. Art, storytelling and patience are vanishing fast. Who will cater for people who want to see intense intelligent quality sci-fi? Not the Syfy channel! They are decapitating every good show they commission. Stargate Atlantis.. Now SG Universe – the same fate. Just as it becomes unmissable. Is there any point in looking forward to BSG: Blood & Chrome? I think we’d need 5 televisions on in all our houses to half guarentee it wont be cancelled after 3 shows! I just watched the final episode of Caprica and was blown away by it. It will be missed…

  • Vboi

So disappointed, the beginning of the cylon creation about to be explained and answered and boom, the damned suited monotheists and their numbers screwed it up. Frak you syfy FRAK YOU! I don’t care about adamas life before battlestar I want to know more about Zoe, Tamara, Sister clarice the birth of the final five, maybe even a glimmer of caprica six! Jeez what a scew up.

  • RodKat

it’s Fracken lunacy Caprica should continue the fact that they have cancelled it is insane I found the show to be awesome and i felt transported into the world as i watched the stoy the actors everything was on par so WHY????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • NotHappyWithSyFy

This was the only show on SyFy that I watched. All other shows demonstrate ‘B’ quality.

  • Frmsix

They didn’t give it a fracken chance!!!!

  • Mark

Man the show was just starting to get gripping. It’s so hard to find decent scifi shows now battlestar has finished and now caprica. This show is brilliant and has a depth of storyline, effects and audio quality unmatched by any other show.

  • Aussieaussie

So… they mean to say the rest of the fracken world has to put up with the mass produced bullsh%t we already have too much of!!!!…. How about they get their hands out of their pockets, stop thinking with their … oh.. their $$$$ and what is the highest earning garbage!… It would be nice to see some initiative from a network where they stick by the things that tell a unique and captivating story… They need to grow some balls and tackle the concept of originalty head on, instead of investing is some retarded TV entertainment cloning program!

  • Blake

I was a bug BSG viewer but Caprica never engaged me at all. I watched the first few episodes but the whole plot of the daughter trapped in a cylons body was just to wierd to be viable, it was to mutch like a sopie with endless teen drama. No thanks

  • Guest_and_SciFi fan

SyFy could have done well by finishing Caprica properly to blend in with Blood and Chrome.   I’m very disappointed in the Networks decisions.   With the advent of Interent communications, I doubt the ratings companies are getting good data on viewing audiences likes and dislikes.  IE:  ECW? on SyFy?   Yeah, that’s pretty whack.
