THE MIDDLE “Halloween” Review

THE MIDDLE "Halloween"

THE MIDDLE “Halloween” Season 2 Episode 6 - Frankie and Mike have different ideas of fun, Brick has a very different idea for a costume, and Sue just plain feels too different in the “Halloween” episode of THE MIDDLE.

Sad Sue is back, but I think (hope?) this may be the last we see of her for a while. Nice to see Reverend Tim Tom again, spreading the word of God as only he can–”You know who else hit a rough patch? Jesus. He was dead.” Heh. Love “rockin’ it resurrection-style,” too, and Frankie`s description of the holy hayride: “whenever there’s an exciting event for kids, the church offers an alternative.” Sue’s first (and at least second) kiss is sweet, and even though it won’t solve everything any more than cross country did or could have, it should give her enough confidence to bring back the bubbly Sue I love so much.

Leave it to Brick to pick a costume only one person can recognize. Sgt. Charles Stuart McKenzie–heh. He really did look like Groundskeeper Willie, and hee to the Gossip Girl reference–Brick is just that fashion-forward. The Sue-Brick parade of dog and fire hydrant, hockey player and puck, and chicken and egg costumes may be my favorite part of the episode. Oh, Sue. Also–the scariest part of the episode is Brick holding a knife.

I know Axl’s storyline is meant as a counterpoint to Sue’s arc and it does work in that sense, but wow, is it dull and predictable. Axl and his buds freaking out over a plastic bag is amusing, but I feel like there should be something more. At least Brick has a chance to show off his wisdom: “Kissing girls is gross enough. Wouldn’t it be worse right after the girls threw up.”

“You’re not fun. You’re Mike.” Ouch. Funny, but ouch. He couldn’t have danced a little? I have to say, Halloween on TV really is much more fun than real Halloween. No one ever TPs (or eggs) anything where I live. “This is three-ply. It’s coming home with us.” Mike and Frankie’s tiff feels real and I’m glad they end up having fun at the Donahues’ house and picking up the “snow” at their own.

While this isn’t a great episode of The Middle and it has more smiles than laughs, it’s still fun to watch. I really hope Sue reverts back to her happy self and that Brick gets more fun stuff to do. He was mostly one joke in this episode, and he can be so much more. I mostly feel the show is missing its normal sense of silly fun, but that made a reappearance at the end of “Halloween” with the toilet paper hijinks, so here’s hoping we’ll see more of that next episode.

What did you think of the episode? Will happy, fun Sue make a comeback now?

I totally agree with your assessment of this episode–mainly smiles and not laughs. I think the only time I laughed out loud was at Axl freaking out over that plastic bag! The reverend was excellent (you listed my favorite quotes)–and I was so happy Sue finally got a truly happy moment (not just one where she somehow finds the glass half full). I also enjoyed the stuff about Brick’s costume–especially Groundskeeper Willie (and thanks for the Wikipedia link as I would have failed Brick).

Oh, forgot the Brawny reference–that was great too–he really did look like him!

I can’t believe I forgot the Brawny reference–that was probably the best one! Thanks for reminding me.

I totally failed Brick (and my father the history buff–oops), but I had that Wikipedia entry up in 2 seconds flat, so I guess that’s something. :)
