MODERN FAMILY “Halloween” Review

Modern Family (ABC) Halloween

MODERN FAMILY “Halloween” Season 2 Episode 6 - Mitchell discovers his inner not-so superhero, Gloria takes offense when told she’s hard to understand, Phil freaks out when a neighbor couple splits up, and Claire tries to hold onto her “crazy-ass holiday” in the “Halloween” episode of MODERN FAMILY.

Mitchell stuck in his Spiderman suit is amazing (of course I had to). “Yesterday’s lazy cures today’s crazy.” Truer words have never been spoken, but oh, the squeaking! Love how when Cam sad the real Spiderman could help when Mitchell’s clothes are all “toilety,” Mitchell spots himself in the mirror and says, “He’s here” and wow, way to shimmy down a drainpipe, Spiderman! Nice to see Justin Kirk (Andy from Weeds) back on the show, especially his feeling Mitchell’s bicep and his face when he sees Mitchell in costume. We even get a bonus of Dracula flashing the thumb’s up sign.

I didn’t think any story Cam told could be worth the build-up, but the disembodied head crying “I wet my pants! I wet my pants!” absolutely is. “You had squeaky thighs. I lost my childhood.” Oh, goodness. “That’s a lot of complaining from someone who had thirds of our Tandori turkey” is a great line to begin with, but Eric Stonestreet’s hair toss takes it to a whole new level.

Poor Phil. First he over-identifies with his divorcing neighbor and stalks a very confused Claire (“That’s coconuts. You’re super delightful.”), and then he gets repeatedly scared by the motion activated mummy. Love him crowding Claire on the ladder and “I’m a monogamous social drinker and Claire only sleep-hits me.”

I’m so glad Claire gets her “crazy-ass holiday” after having to give Christmas up to Colombia and Thanksgiving to the gays and Food Network because I love when the family gets together. She makes a terrific corpse bride, by the way, and Haley as “Mother Teresa back when she was hot” is so very wrong and even more right. “I’ll pay you ten dollars to put on some more clothes.” “I’ll bet that’s the first time you’ve heard that.” Oh, Alex in a cage–never change. Claire has the best insult with “Are you trying to get candy or Japanese businessmen?”

How terrific is Sofia Vergara? Obviously she’s gorgeous, but she’s also ridiculously funny. I love both of Gloria’s accents in this episode. “A deer in head lice,” “volumptuous,” “doggie dog world” are all excellent, but it’s the box of baby Jesus that makes me spit out my drink. I so didn’t see that punch coming, but poor Mitchell. “He scared the baby Jesus out of me!” Two hilarious baby Jesus jokes in one episode–I didn`t even know that was possible. Very sweet moment when Jay tells Gloria their meet cute story, too, but I like the exploding Gloria at the end best. She’s tougher than working with explosives. Hee. “She’s not insane. She’s my mother!”

“This whole thing has been one big fog cue.” Ha! Actually tonight’s Modern Family is one giant laugh after another, from “Hot. Who is this?” to Mitchell balancing on the toilet. There’s so much crammed in here and I love all of it. Which costume did you like the best? I vote for Claire and Phil’s corpse bride and groom.

I think this is the first week in a long time where Gloria’s story line wins it for me. I totally lost it when Jay pulled that baby Jesus out of the box–hilarious!
I was also happy to see “Andy” on the show. (In your review, you said “back” but I didn’t remember him being on a previous episode.)
Haley and those totally inappropriate costumes were terrific (and only made better by Claire and Alex’s comments).

This was the best Gloria story in a long, long time! Jay’s face when he pulled out the baby Jesus made that already hilarious moment even better, too. So awesome.

Justin Kirk was in the “Benched” episode last spring. Mitchell went to Justin Kirk’s house because he wanted to interview for a job. Cam was oddly nervous and destructive and He and Mitchell ended up pretty much trashing the house and car, but Mitchell got the job anyway.

You got all of the great quotes but the first one about today’s lazy stops tomorrow’s crazy was so awesome. What a great episode! I also vote for the corpse bride and groom as best costumes. They were fantastic.

I just hope someday I get to actually say yesterday’s lazy cures today’s crazy. I should given I’ve been known to be lazy and crazy on occasion. :)
