RAISING HOPE “Happy Halloween” and “Family Secrets” Review

RAISING HOPE (Fox) Happy Halloween

RAISING HOPE “Happy Halloween” and “Family Secrets” Season 1 Episodes 5 and 6 – We get a double helping of RAISING HOPE tonight and I really couldn’t be happier.

There are tricks and treats galore in the “Happy Halloween” episode where Jimmy shows he’s a much better Batman for Sabrina’s adorable Robin than Wyatt is, Maw Maw regresses to childhood, and Burt wants a hug.

I love that even though I guessed right off that Burt was the scary man, the reason surprised me. “I did it for the hugs!” I knew Burt was behind Hope’s disappearance as soon as he said, “Daddy’s going to make it all better,” and is it wrong that his torturing Jimmy like that totally warmed my heart even before Jimmy’s sweet voice-over? The Leverage-like reenactments of Burt’s cons are an excellent touch and the small Burt moments throughout, like his hunting and releasing a fly, maniacal giggle after he eggs Jimmy, and kissing the wolf puppet, make me laugh surprisingly hard.

Candy-regressed, chocolate-slathered “transvestite ninja” Maw Maw is fun. “I like nine year old Maw Maw. We play jacks.” Hee. Virginia is a surprisingly patient “mom” to her even when she’s exhausted. “It’s feet soaking and Jolly Rancher martini time for Mommy.” How many times will that be said across the country this Halloween? One thing that probably won’t be said is my favorite line of the episode: “You bet your batty nine year old ass we can!”

Jimmy and Sabrina’s terrific slow burn continues, and in case there was any doubt that Sabrina and Jimmy would eventually end up together (there really wasn’t), we see Jimmy come through for her when she needs him with an awesome homemade Batman costume (sweet crooked bat detail) even though he hates Halloween and he keeps her company when she’s passed out (Wyatt’s a tool for leaving her), protecting her from skeevy foot-smelling guy. Anyway, better kissers almost always win. I love this relationship.

We switch gears in the “Family Secrets” episode to take a closer look at Virginia, who has been lying to Jimmy for years about everything from an eel growing in his bum to his being allergic to fruit (the continuity fairy strikes again-sweet!). The internet tubes don’t reach this side of town–”Stupid, lying mom!” Funny as both a mom lie and a Ted Stevens joke. Bonus!

This is really Garret Dillahunt’s night to shine because Burt is awesome in this episode. From “I don’t practice deceitery” and “It’s my own private hell–private hell!” to his slightly creepy over-attention to Lucy’s sexy dance and “Roker bugs me, too” mini-rant, he is full of win. Well, except for calling Hope chunky–oh, that poor badly made- up baby! “I’m stuck in the middle like a third nipple” is one of those lines I need to find a way to use in life.

Not to be outdone, Martha Plimpton’s “We come from idiot stock. Are you happy?” still has me laughing and I love her I told you so reaction to Jimmy’s star fruit allergy. Not get him to a doctor or get him some Benadryl, but “see, I protected you.” Awesome. What a terrific twist that Maw Maw told her the bee hive/plastic bag/duck Reader’s Digest story to protect her, and I have to wonder if/when swinger Grandma Louise will make a reappearance. “I have a whole new understanding of why grandmothers cover their furniture in plastic.” Ha!

Lucy’s execution really is a tough nut to crack. “Mommy’s not here because the government had her barbecued” is definitely better than saying she was put down, but “electric bye-bye chair” is the funniest. How amazing are those prison videos? Bijou Phillips absolutely rocks them, going from insane to sweet in the blink of an eye. “Your mom is bananas–which, by the way, are delicious!” Love fruit-devouring Jimmy and his chugging antihistamine so he can still eat star fruit. “See why I lied–you hog all the damn fruit!”

Jimmy waking up Maw Maw, putting her back to sleep (foot-rubbing-hee), and waking her up again to have lucid moments is hilarious. Photoshopped bin Laden and Sabrina’s “Yeah, I was worried” as she chomps an apple are great, and the babies who play Hope have the best expressions ever.

As always, I’m impressed by the balance of heartwarming and hilarious. Not many shows can go from a sweet hug scene to an ending shot of someone vomiting on the rug, but it’s perfect in the “Happy Halloween” episode and equally fun is the family viewing of Lucy’s video (“When you take out the violence, cursing, and graphic lesbian sex, she’s actually kind of sweet.”) followed by the “I can’t believe you hit that, Jimmy;” “Thanks, Dad” exchange. I really can’t think of a better Halloween treat than this hour of Raising Hope.

OMG, how I love this show. I ended up watching it just because it comes after Glee, but now I am addicted.
Your review rocks, too… good stuff.

Yay, another Raising Hope fan! It is addicting, isn’t it? I think it just keeps getting funnier.

Thanks for the compliment about my review–you’ll make me blush. :)

I was wondering if you know what the song is that Lucy is singing in the video at the very end of the Family Secrets video?? It’s super cute!

I wish I did because it really was adorable, but my search with the lyrics came up empy.

I happened to catch this after Glee and I’m hooked, setting it up as a series recording. I actually slapped my knee once or twice.

My favorite moment was Dad in the monster outfit – the flashback. Oh wait, I loved Cloris Leachman with her costume on backwards and her chocolate face. I love candy and imagined myself looking just like her when I lose my marbles.

On the 2nd episode I had to tape it immediately because my 26 year old son (who still lives at home) was angry that I was “lying” to him yesterday. I made him sit down with me to watch it.

I’ve always thought that Martha Plimpton was a scene stealer and I love her in this. I could go on & on, the jail tapes, the bees, plastic bag and the duck, swinger grandma, cute baby (and I don’t think many babies are cute)…

I have to laugh because I imagined myself becoming candy-coated Maw Maw when I get old and daffy, too. :)

I LOVE that you made your son watch “Family Secrets.” I mean maybe not all parents will tell their son he’s allergic to fruit, but doesn’t every parent tell some lie some time?

While shows like this lead you to believe that they’ll eventually end up together, a few episodes back when he was put into the friend zone, it felt very real. So far the show hasn’t done anything to contradict that and I waiting to see if they’ll have a plausible explanation for taking him out of that zone.

What Julia says below. :) Also I have every faith in the writers, to be honest. Every step–absolutely including the “friend zone,” though that is usually very fluid–has felt incredibly real to me so far and I have no doubt that will continue and the chemistry between these two actors certainly doesn’t hurt.

  • Julia

In response to Marcus, even on Friends, the “friend zone” did not last long for Ross and Rachel. It is not meant to be forever. I’m LOVING Jimmy and Sabrina together. I think their relationship feels real. And it is building slowly. Some say that true love develops from a strong friendship. “Love is friendship set on fire.” I think I read that somewhere. And I think it’s important to even recall that Virgina compared Jimmy/Sabrina to Ross/Rachel. To me, that is a nice foreshadowing from the writers in a way.

But in regards to your question, I think the writers are building Jimmy and Sabrina in a realistic way. They are friends right now. But even in tonight’s “Halloween” episode, you see that when Sabrina kissed Jimmy, she said that was the most “amazing” kiss ever. Obviously, her boyfriend did not leave her that speechless before. You can be friends with someone one day, and then fall in love with them the next day.

Plus, I adore the chemistry with the actors playing Jimmy and Sabrina. Feels realistic and genuine.

Michelle, yet another terrific review of both episodes, as usual. I enjoyed the two new episodes a LOT. For one thing, ironically, I’m not a fan of “Halloween” type of episodes. BUT Raising Hope made the “Halloween” episode super funny and touching at the same time!

Who did not love the whole “hugging “appreciation” that Burt has with his son? It is super sweet. Granted, the WAY he went about getting those hugs…LOL.

Also, I agree that these particular episodes definitely showcase Garret Dillahunt. He is SUPERB.

And actually, I’ve been waiting for the show to show more closeness with Jimmy and his father. We tend to usually see Jimmy bonding with his mom in the prior episodes. So I’m glad that I finally got to see an episode that truly focuses on Jimmy/Burt’s fantastic father/son bond. And it’s funny, after Jimmy’s realization that hugs from your child are super sweet, I was waiting for him to go and hug Burt for no other reason than giving him a hug! LOL. But alas, that did not happen. However, we still saw Burt sleeping and hugging his pillow all happy. I’m guessing he was still dreaming about the awesome hug he got from Jimmy earlier!

It really was great to see Jimmy-Burt closeness, and I wondered if they would have Jimmy go hug Burt at the end, too. I think I’m glad they didn’t, just because it’s less predictable and I love how Raising Hope keeps me on my toes. Like Burt said about Lucy, when I think it’s going to zig, it zags. :)

I think you are spot on in your analysis of Jimmy and Sabrina and it really is one of my favorite relationships on TV in a long time.

Great review Michelle! You captured everything that made these two episodes so much fun to watch. You even reminded me of the some of the best moments, and they made me laugh again!

Burt’s need for hugs was the most adorable, yet unexpected thing in the halloween episode.

Garret Dillahunt and Martha Plimpton are so freaking amazing every single episodes.

The “electric bye-bye chair” is hilarious and I just loved the “you’re allergic to fruits lie kind of got outta hand.”

    Can’t wait for next week!

The hugs thing killed me. It’s probably the last thing I ever would have expected, which makes it even more amazing.
