HAWAII FIVE-0 “Ko’olauloa” Season 1 Episode 6 – The CEO of a successful surf company is shot to death while out on the waves and right in front of Kono. The man meant a lot to Kono and, determined to stay on the case, she convinces the team to let her help find his killer. Their first suspects are from a group called the Kapu, who keep order on the island, two of which were sent to jail after Ian testified against them.
Kono meets up with another old friend, the son of Ian’s partner. Ben is estranged from his father, living in a city of tents with other people who can’t afford million dollar homes on the island but refuse to leave the land of their ancestors. When it turns out the land was being bought by Ian, Ben goes straight to the top of their suspect list. In the end it is his father (played by Kevin Sorbo) who hired out the killing after finding out that Ian was Ben’s father and that the man was planning on giving his entire estate to his newly discovered son.
My favorite bits…
Danny saying he had nothing against surfing – just sharks, skin cancer and anything that involves his little girl wearing a bikini.
Chin telling Danny he should try flip-flops. Yeah, I don’t really see that happening any time soon. I like Danny in his suits for now.
Chin telling Kono that part of doing their job was knowing when you’re not the one to do the job.
The gratuitous hotness they gave us of McGarrett and Chin on the dirtbikes, done to a rockin’ soundtrack no less.
Danny telling Kono he didn’t want to see McGarrett’s “constipated look” from them not doing what he wants them to do.
Danny describing the Kapu as the Hawaiian Boy Scouts and McGarrett pointing out that they were the kind who would beat you to a pulp if you disrespected their land.
McGarrett and Danny’s argument over whether going to the bar was a detour or a strategic op.
Danny pointing out to McGarrett that being called a sick person was in fact not a compliment.
McGarrett staring down the Kapu leader.
Danny checking out his blue tongue in the car mirror and pointing out that it was now the same color as his shirt.
Danny warning the suspects that McGarrett would become a lot less friendly, while he himself was always quite cordial.
The little boy singing Train’s “Hey Soul Sister” on the beach. OMG, so freaking cute I could just die.
Kono saving the little girl and then kicking the guy off the bike.
The way they zoomed in on the “Go Slow, Enjoy The Ride” sign before going to the crazy car chase that took place near a cliff.
Danny telling McGarrett that he wasn’t scared, he was “rationally concerned”.
The two very different expressions on McGarrett and Danny’s faces – one of determination and the other of.. um… rational concern?
That incredibly smooth move where McGarrett spun the car while Danny jumped up and pointed a gun at the bad guys. Nice!
McGarrett telling Danny that when he says “book’em Danno”, it’s a term of endearment and Danny telling him likes it.
Actually getting a little emotional during the final scene at the memorial on the water and them sending Ian back home. Very beautiful.
Overall I liked the twists and turns in this episode of Hawaii Five-0. While I did have a suspicion it might be Ben’s father who was the killer, I didn’t expect it having anything to do with the fact that he wasn’t Ben’s dad after all. The secondary storyline was a good one, giving Kono a chance to have some emotion but not in an overly sappy way.
What did you think of the episode? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!
