Mike & Molly “Mike’s Apartment” Review

Mike & Molly “Mike’s Apartment” Season 1 Episode 6 – Well I might have to just eat my words, and no that is not another fat joke at the expense of MIKE & MOLLY. This week’s episode was actually – wait for it – funny. With the couple slowly moving into a relationship, it’s only natural for things to start getting physical. And Mike & Molly, along with their meddling families, are dealing with the next steps. Trying to help out Molly, as its been awhile since she has had a man in her life, her sister and mother only make her more nervous about being intimate with Mike for the first time. For his part Mike was just as nervous since it’s been awhile for him too. And Molly’s family wasn’t the only one interfering on the couple’s special night.

Mike set up a lovely night back at his place, until his mom cut it short with feigned chest pains. Molly saw right through the act and questioned him on why his mom is interfering. It seems that its only been him and his mom for twenty years so she is just a bit territorial over him. Molly totally understands but knows that they both need to get over their hang ups, whatever they may be, to move forward. What I appreciated about this episode, and what I have been basically waiting for all season, was to find the humor in this couple’s dating. Beyond the fat jokes, this show about two people trying to find a connection is adorable. The characters are not only dealing with their own inadequacies but they also have to figure out a way to handle their noisy families and know-it-all friends imposing in on their relationship. And this is a very real and very funny dilemma.

‘Mike’s Apartment’ allowed us to really get to know the couple beyond just their outer hangups. While being overweight and everything comes with it is very real, it’s feels artificial when the jokes on the show just surround eating and being fat. This couple deserves just a bit more respect when dealing with their newfound relationship and I am glad we got to see just another snippet of their personalities. The funny was definitely delivered tonight, especially thanks to Swoosie Kurtz and Katy Mixon getting more than just five seconds of face time. So Mike & Molly, we are once again friends and if you keep this up, we could even become more than that.
