BOARDWALK EMPIRE “Family Limitation” Season 1 Episode 6- A man is mugged on the boardwalk. Lucy pounces on Nucky like a tiger. She also keeps calling him “daddy” which is quite weird, to say the least. I’m guessing she’s not aware of Nucky’s tryst with Margaret.
Margaret herself is confused about what to do. She consults the leader of the Temperance movement who hands her a pamphlet, which seems slightly useless to me. She is conflicted: on the one hand, allowing Nucky to provide for her would mean she is secure and her kids are protected and provided for. On the other hand, the words that come along with her position are not so flattering.
Meanwhile in Chicago, the power struggle between Jimmy and Capone is ongoing. Jimmy is sure, calm. Capone mocks him but it’s out of insecurity, not friendship. Over at their house for dinner, Jimmy determines that Capone’s son is not, as he believes, dopey, but deaf.
Van Alden is still searching for connections between Magaret and Nucky.
Lucy and Margaret have their own power struggle in the clothes shop as Lucy forces Margaret to put on some lingerie. Lucy tells Margaret that all she has to do is pout and Nucky’s Catholicism is forgotten. Margaret is clearly not intimidated by her warning.
Nucky tries to teach Lucky Luciano a lesson about taking advantage of women like Jimmy’s mother. Unfortunately news that Margaret is happy with her accommodations interrupts their meeting at the most inopportune time.
Van Alden soon finds out that Margaret is gone and that she’s “a whore” courtesey of her neighbour.
Jimmy and Capone’s hit for control of Greek town is fantastically bloody and shocking in its execution. Capone’s assertion of his power over Jimmy does not work quite as well as he thinks. Jimmy sees through his lies and shows him he is not someone to be messed with. Well, unless you’re packing steaks.
The award for creepiest scene goes to van Alden (who else?) for his obsessive stroking of Margaret’s 16 year old photo, prior to subjecting himself to some goold ole self-flagellation. What does this mean? Is he punishing himself for having sexual feelings? What do you think?
