NCIS: LOS ANGELES “Borderline” Review

NCIS "Borderline" Review

A Humvee full of Marines is ambushed near the Mexican border, sending the team off to investigate what happened in this episode of NCIS: LOS ANGELES, called “Borderline”. Sam and Callen work the case from back in the office while Kensi and Deeks are sent to the desert to see what they can find at the scene. Sam and Callen track a possible drug cartel connection, but Deeks and Kensi track the kidnappers and find that it’s just a bunch of American mercenaries. Behind it all was a business man (played by the always wonderful Alan Ruck) who wanted to drag the US military into a war with the Mexican drug cartel to solve some business problems.

Meanwhile Nate has returned from wherever Hetty sent him last week and he’s definitely different. Quiet, he spends time helping the team out and doing some target practice before finally telling Hetty that he’s decided to go back and this time he’s gone, possibly forever.

My favorite bits…

Deeks flipping his sign to say “Hi Kensi” and telling her that he goes Method when he’s undercover. OMG, I’m so glad my tv doesn’t have smell-o-vision cuz I could tell he smelled pretty bad. I don’t blame her for not giving him a ride.

Call me crazy, but I thought Nate looked pretty hot holding a gun. and he’s not a bad shot either.

Eric asking Deeks what kind of high school rewards its students for bathing.

Deeks managing to stick his really large foot into his really large mouth by starting a conversation about why Sam was better suited to go to the desert with Kensi due to his.. um.. darker skin.

Deeks’ lecherous grin when Kensi asked him if he was ready to go for a ride.

Hetty telling Sam and Callen that Nate had been visiting The Republic of None of Your Damn Business. I wonder if I can use my airline miles to go there?

Kensi talking about all the things her dad taught her and saying they were all things he would have taught a son, only he didn’t have one. Too funny as I too had a dad who did stuff like that with me and I usually tell people that I was the son he never had. I knew there was a reason I liked Kensi, turns out we had similar childhoods.

Callen telling Sam to throw the snitch into the tar pit. You know, I think he would’ve probably done it.

Callen backing up Sam’s decision to bring back Tyrell, even with the risk to Sam.

Callen trying to play it cool on the phone with Hetty as things went to hell at his end.

Kensi telling Deeks he looked rugged, like Malibu Ken. I’m with her, I was surprised to see how much of a softie he was. Then again they’re gonna be partners now and I guess it would be no fun if both of them were tough.

Deeks playing dead to get one of the bad guys closer so he could take him out.

Cheering when the chopper arrived with the rescue party.

Callen giving Nate advice on where to find horrible kabobs, but made a guy who can get him anything in. maybe Iraq?

Overall I liked this episode of NCIS: Los Angeles a lot, right up until I figured out that Nate was leaving. I’m not usually one for seeking out spoilers so I had no clue this was going to happen. This whole ep I was excited as it seemed like Nate’s character was possibly going to be playing a bigger part (he was shooting guns, doing research). I understood them getting rid of Dom last year and I guess with the addition of Deeks, I can also understand the need to get rid of Nate. The only difference is that I actually LIKE Nate. So I’m a very sad reviewer now.

What did you think of the episode? Got any favorite bits or least favorite bits of your own? I’d love to hear from you!

Nate was a worthless character, with really weak lines and input in the team. The camera mostly focused on him for various looks on his face, to punctuate something worthwhile the other characters did or didn’t do. Plus he has something and awkward bite and he looks goofy when he talks. Nell and Deeks are great additions.
