LIFE UNEXPECTED “Criminal Incriminated” Review

Life Unexpected (CW) - Criminal Incriminated

Tonight’s episode of LIFE UNEXPECTED is all about turning over a new leaf, for better or for worse. “Criminal Incriminated” introduces the start of a new phase of life for our eclectic mix of individuals. Their journey of change begins in a characteristically bumpy manner.

Baze starts his new job at his father’s firm. Math coaches girls basketball, which Lux gets talked into trying out for. Lux buys answers to a test she needs to pass and gets caught. Baze talks to Paige about paying for damages caused by the fire. She does this by stealing money from Cate and gets kicked out, ending up with new living arrangements at Baze’s loft.

I’m beginning to warm up to the new approach and characters of Life Unexpected‘s second season. The first couple of episodes bombarded us with arbitrary soap opera style drama, which I normally would not protest, except that I don’t think Life Unexpected should be that kind of show. I don’t want just another drama with purposefully generated conflict. I liked the original charm of the show, including its consistency, slower pace, and investment in the characters’ stories. So I was pleased to see that tonight’s episode is taking a step back and giving attention to character development. Lux comes to the realization that she wants to be like her parents, so much so that she resorts to cheating because of the pressure she felt. Thank goodness she still essentially knows right from wrong. Despite wearing a suit and brushing his hair, Baze is still Baze. But he has gained a sense of responsibility towards his own life and towards Lux. Cate finally understands that people, specifically Ryan, overlook her mistakes and flaws, so she should allow more leeway for others as well. Though this may come back to haunt her if we figure out what Ryan is hiding in the first episode. Lux is more like Cate than she thinks, being ungrateful for Jones’ tolerance of her often inconsiderate behavior. (Yeah, Jones is back…with an Astro Boy hairstyle.) Ryan and Baze surprisingly begin to get along, albeit with a $10,000 peace offering payment for fire damages. So how long do you think everyone will last acting like adults? I’m still hoping Lux won’t act too adult with Eric.

    I loved it!
I thought it felt more like season one than the first two episodes of this season
Not a dull moment, and each of their own little storylines wound nicely together
Once again, I was left grinning like an idiot at the TV screen when the episode finished… Not that I’m complaining :)

My thoughts exactly. And I thought you could really see the cast’s chemistry in the last scene. They were goofing off more than acting.

Love the return of Jones! Please keep him around.

I agree. Love seeing Lux/Jones teenage awkwardness! So endearing.

It was a good episode. Hopefully Cate and Baze start doing some parenting because she really needs to be grounded.

I like Jones’ return and hopefully Lux realizes that she doesn’t have to throw herself at a teacher to find a nice guy. The teacher storyline seems to forced drama-ish.
