MIKE & MOLLY “First Date” Review

Before I get into this week’s episode of MIKE & MOLLY, I just want to say that I really wanted to like this show. There is just something about a classic sitcom that feels like, well, home to me. And it’s about time that someone like Melissa McCarthy was given a starring role, as opposed to her standard chubby sidekick gigs, but this show isn’t doing it for me. It’s too formulaic, dated and a real waste of the talent it has. Not everything has to be edgy, but it has to be modern and this isn’t modern.

Last night marked the first date for Mike (Billy Gardell) and Molly (McCarthy), and wouldn’t you know it that everything went wrong. Molly caught a cold right before the big night and her sister Victoria (Katy Mixon) and mother (Swoosie Kurtz) decided to feed a cough syrup mixture, coupled with a diet pill to keep her up. And wouldn’t you know it – hijinks ensued. Molly made the meal interesting and capped off the night with vomiting out of Mike’s car, which somehow convinced the Chicago police officer he wanted to marry her.

While this week’s episode of Mike & Molly “First Date” laid off on the easy fat jokes, it still held back on what I am positive it can deliver. See how ABC’s Modern Family took a typical family sitcom and threw it on its ear with the single-camera and `new’ American family dynamic is what Mike & Molly needed. It’s refreshing to see a couple, who happen to be heavy, portrayed on TV. But that in itself isn’t new, especially when we are constantly referencing their issues with weight. The talent and timing is there, it’s just now time that the jokes caught up.

I love this show. This show is HYSTERICALLY funny. I haven’t laughed this hard at a show in a long, long time. Melissa McCarthy was funny as hell in last night’s episode. Her portrayal of someone looped up on Codiene, Diet Pills, and Wine was absolutely hysterical. When she grabbed his nose hair and said that it was bugging her all night long I nearly wet myself.

Not only was last night’s episode funny, it was also heartwarming as well when he said she was a lady and then said he was going to marry the girl. So sweet.

For those that say there are too many fat jokes, I disagree.

CBS needs to keep this show on the air. If you’re not watching this show, you’re missing out.

I loved this show. I was laughing out loud last night. Yes it was a bit predictible, but it’s a new show. They have to get their groove. I think the lead actress is so talented. They should rethink the big sister role, the actress is fine, but her whole persona is annoying. The rest of the show is great.

I’ve tried giving the show a chance. Both episodes though I found it so bad that I had to turn it off halfway through. Other comedies which CBS took off the air were better than this.

I really enjoyed this show, I actually made me laugh out loud. Something I rarely do these days. I thought the fat jokes were funny I wasn’t at all offended. The story line was predictable true, but then so is day to day real life. I felt the characters were engaging and the one liners not overly snappy. Love comes in all sizes some of us need to be reminded of that at least once a week. I pray for the shows success.
