MELISSA & JOEY “Dancing With the Stars of Toledo” Review

Melissa & Joey

This week’s episode of MELISSA & JOEY once again finds Mel trying to get in the public eye, Joey offering his assistance, and sexual tension flying off the charts.

Mel’s annoying assistant Stephanie is on the hunt to find opportunities for some good PR for Mel. They finally come up with the idea for Mel to compete in a Dancing with the Stars of Toledo competition. However, when Stephanie suggests that Mel’s dance partner be the chief of sanitation, whom Mel deems as “gropey,” Joey quickly offers to be Mel’s partner. He then proceeds to show off his dance moves with a very willing Stephanie. Although I find this new assistant a bit grating, she does have a more humorous way about her then the rather stiff last assistant. I actually laughed when she made the panther hissing sound.

Once Mel and Joey start to practice the initimate Tango dance, they soon realize how attracted they are to each other. Mel warns Joey to stay away from her ticklish parts, although she won’t tell him where they are because that would be like “giving away launch codes” and Joey remarks that he wouldn’t want to “set her off.” Mel and Joey then decide that they need to pretend they have chemistry, but in a creepy brother/sister way that nobody would buy, in order to win the competition.

Mel, however, is unable to give up control even though Joey knows more about dancing than she does. In protest, Joey quits. Lennox convinces him to be the bigger person, but Mel has already replaced Joey with Mark Ballas (Melissa Joan Hart’s real life Dancing With the Stars partner). Joey is hurt and jealous, but Mel, being controlling and ambitious, only wants to win. Of course, her over exertion in all areas leads her to jump without warning into Mark’s arms, causing them both to fall. Mel hurts her knee and somehow convinces Joey and Mark to dance the Tango together, with Joey in the lead, in the competition. What follows is a strangely awkward, yet very good dance. Naturally, they win the competition.

This was a fun episode. I actually laughed quite a bit. This was especially true at the end when Mel is doped up on pain meds. Some of my favorite lines include:

“This is why I don’t watch Showtime” (during the Mark/Joey dance)
“Why is she talking like an old southern woman” (while Mel is doped up)
“She’s lost her mind. She looks totally ridiculous” (while Mel is dancing with a crutch but dreaming it is Joey)

All of these lines are courtesy of my favorite character, Ryder. Give that boy more lines and forget Lennox exists at all, please! What did you think of tonight’s episode of Melissa and Joey? Did you find yourself laughing more or was I just doped up? With only three episodes left, what do you want to see happen this season? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comments below.

I fully agree with you about giving Ryder more storylines. I didn’t like that they focused on Lennox more this episode. She just doesn’t have the same comedic timing as the rest.

I still hate the new assistant. I felt the other one was a better straight-man / part-time foil for Mel. Kind of like Fred from I Love Lucy. Sometimes she was a voice of reason and sometimes she joined in Mel’s cooky schemes.

all in all it was an ok episode. Not my favorite but still good.

Well, Chris, we are in trouble next week. From what I can recall Lennox’s name is in the title of the episode so I am sure she will be the focus.

You are right about Mel needing a foil. Funny you should mention I Love Lucy as I read somewhere a comparison between Melissa Joan Hart and Lucille Ball. I am not sure I would agree, but it was an interesting thought.

I like Melissa Joan Hart but I would definitely not say she’s anywhere near as talented as Lucille Ball.

Hopefully Lennox proves us wrong next week.

      Agreed on both counts.
