CHUCK Vs The Suitcase Review

Chuck (NBC) Season 4 Episode 2

The second episode of CHUCK‘s fourth season, “Chuck Versus The Suitcase” found Chuck and the gang doing after a ‘smart bullets’ arms dealer named Sophia at a fashion show in Milan. Meanwhile, Awesome and Ellie have a disagreement about the baby and Morgan makes some improvements to the Buy More.

The episode started off with a man chasing a beautiful woman (Sophia) down a street in heels (never a good idea). She stops, whips out a gun, and fires a bullet slow motion into the man’s head. The bullet glows blue. It is not a regular bullet! It is a smart bullet! It can go around corners! You know what: this bullet is wanted…by the CIA.

Basically it’s up to Chuck and Sarah to retrieve the bullet (Casey has to sit this one out thanks to an incident in Yves St Laurent). Chuck and Sarah’s relationship is under a slight pressure because Sarah has yet to unpack her suitcase, even though she’s been living with Chuck for eight months. This comes to a head when Chuck’s almost-last words (as he’s hold a ticking bomb in his hand) are forgiveness for her settling down issues. Sarah defuses the bomb and she and Chuck head to the Sophia’s room where they comically hide in the closet whilst the model/arms dealer undresses and heads to the shower. While Chuck deals with the safe, Sarah deals with the bodyguard.

They eventually realize the smart bullet software chips are hidden in the Sophia’s sequined dress, so she can easily slip it through customs and security as she heads to various fashion shows under her modelling cover. Chuck and Sarah head back to Milan to stop her; unforuntately they are separated. It’s up to Chuck and his tranquilizer gloves and Sarah and her awesome fighting skills to take down the guards and Sophia. Sarah’s brawl with Sophia crashes out onto the runway. If this were any other show I would roll my eyes as Sarah cover is undoubtedly blown. But this is Chuck. I’d say some enemy of Sarah or Chuck’s will see the magazine cover and target her (hopefully it’s not Shaw…

Anyways, Morgan convinces Casey to call his daughter, and, after realizing that the Buy More is far too well managed, he convinces General Beckman to allow him to hire some staffers: welcome back, Jeff and Lester! Their introduction (a video diary as they recount their days living out of Lester’s van, like survivors of a zombie attack) was hilarious. Because of his actions, Morgan is promoted to Store Manager.

Meanwhile, Devon discovers (using his skills of common sense) that the Buy More is indeed run by spies, but Chuck convinces him he is still a civilian. I really hope Ellie figures out the truth soon.

What did you think of this episode of Chuck? I love that Awesome wants to have an awesome baby, and I thought Ellie’s memories of her mother were introduced really well, with her looking over photo albums from her childhood whilst Devon is asleep.

Linda Hamilton did not make an appearance, which is good: if she’s not relevant to the plot then I don’t think a throwaway scene should be wasted on her. She deserves far more. I think I’m more excited for Ellie to meet her mother than Chuck, especially since Ellie is now having a child of her own.

Though Sarah’s trouble setting down roots is similar to her relationship trouble, it was well-handled in both the writing and acting departments as the episode ended with her hanging up her clothes-I just hope she doesn’t take Chuck’s mumbling about starting up a family to heart.

I don’t get the Greta joke (Isaiah Mustafa this week) but aside from that I have to say I thought it was an excellent episode, expertly balancing the comedy, drama, action and those nice poignant moments in a way few shows can. How about you? Leave your comments below!
