SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND May ‘Close Up Shop’ Or Recast

Spartacus: Blood and Sand

In a follow up to recent news of Andy Whitfield leaving SPARTACUS: BLOOD AND SAND, Ausiello is reporting that the Starz series may ‘close up shop’.

Starz has yet to make a decision, but executive producer Steven S. DeKnight says the series has two main options: “to close up shop or recast”. He went on to say, “I want to talk to Andy and find out how he feels about the options. That’s obviously very important to us.”

Whitfield, who played lead character Spartacus for the show’s first (and so far, only) season, was recently diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was set to return for season 2, but left the series after doctors advised him to continue treatment.

Prequel series Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, filmed during Whitfield’s prior absence, is set to air in January 2011.

I was expecting to hate this show, but after getting by the awful first episode with it’s 300-like effects, this grew to be a great drama! I don’t think it would be the same to recast his character–it would be better if they either did more prequel stuff, or with their CG magic bring Andy’s character back long enough to kill him off and replace him with a new character–after all. Although recasting should be easy, just have the new character say “I an Spartacus” ;)

i agree but i thnk that they should just keep doin prequel stuff until he is at full health even if they were to kill him on the show it just wouldnt be the same without andy, i will truly miss him on the show, he is AWESOME.
