FAMILY GUY “And Then There Were Fewer” Review

Family Guy "And Then There Were Fewer" (FOX)

FAMILY GUY meets Agatha Christie. The ninth season premiere, “And Then There Were Fewer”, kicked off with the Griffin family heading to a mansion in the middle of nowhere along with fellow residents of Quahog. One by one, several characters are killed off and it’s up to Peter Griffin and his fellow Quahogians (Quahogans? Quahogs?) to figure out who the killer is.

It turns out all of the residents of Quahog were invited for dinner in their honor, hosted by James Woods. Woods is a born again Christian, and he decides to make amends with the guests at dinner, each of whom he says he has somehow wronged in the past. As each of the guests are killed off, cluedo-style, chaos ensues.

Family Guy is either hilarious or cringingly unfunny. “And Then There Were Fewer” was mostly the latter.

Though they were few and far between, my favourite moments were:

  • Quagmire’s girlfriend Stephanie was hilarious, even after she was shot dead, giving Stewie the chance to deadpan: “I can’t help feeling this would be sadder if she weren’t heavy.”
  • Peter, whilst splitting the group into sets of two: “Meg you go with Carl, sorry Carl.”
  • Derek (Jillian’s husband), when he went to the roof trying to get a signal, pointing to the camera (hiding the killer) in a parody of teen slasher flicks and exclaimed: “It’s you! The man or woman whose been killing everybody!”
  • “If anybody’s gonna take that bitch down, it’s gonna be me” Stewie, after shooting his mother’s would-be killer.
  • The montage revealing the killer (news anchor Diane Simmons) was remotely amusing. Even though several secondary characters were murdered in this episode, there was little to remember. It was a disappointing season opener, little to quote and less to remember.

Episode was LAME. Try again guys.

Really? I thought it was hilarious! What show were you guys watching?

    • Conny

Wow, I have no idea what show you were watching because I disagree with almost everything you’ve said.

I found it an extremely clever, engaging, funny and well-written episode. There were plenty of wriggly one-liners to enjoy. The animation was stellar and it was so much fun to see so many of our favourite characters. A GREAT season opener!

As a side note, you should probably warn any readers of the spoilers in your article.

        Hi Conny,

Thanks for your comment! But since this is a post airing review, spoilers are fair game.

As a mystery fan I found the episode very neat and well done. I enjoyed this change of pace in Family Guy episodes.
As a Family Guy fan, I felt it was OK. I found some parts that were strange and unfunny. For example, when Consuela spoke about her nephew and what James Woods did to him…that wasn’t funny. It was an extremely unconformable moment and made no sense to me. Am I missing something?

As a Family Guy fan I too was disappointed. Family Guy’s film references (Nightmare on Elm Street) fell flat and Peter’s line when the lights went out (I’m paraphrasing): “Is this what black people see?” was lame. Ah well, as I said, when it’s good, it’s awesome, when it’s unfunny it’s crap. Hopefully next week will be deadly!

Excellent episode. It showed that Family Guy has an amazing writing staff, and amazing animation. Just because it wasn’t a half-hour of vulgarity and side-splitting humor, doesn’t make it any less fantastic. The story was very well written, and it actually emersed you into it, like any other well-written murder mystery. It was still hilarious as well. I understand that there are some that don’t understand subtle humor, and are only after one-liners, but the humor was there, people. This episode shows that Family Guy is a multi-dementional, hilarious, well-written and well animated cartoon. Even in it’s ninth season, this show can still throw curveballs, and not make desperate attempts to fit op culture….they actually verbally destroy pop-culture every chance they get. Admittedly, the legendary “The Simpsons” is getting stale, and “South Park” is as repetitive as ever, but for Family Guy, there is no better show on T.V. Family Guy tells it how it is, and makes it funny. Great season opener for Family Guy.

Couldnt agree more. This was a GREAT episode. Wonderful animation, sound, etc. It reminded me of early family guy. It was more about an interesting plot and storyline, rather than just being about one flashback after another. I much rather prefer smart subtle humor, and this episode delivered plenty of that for me. Guess to each their own, but from what I have been reading online, this is one of the top 3 episodes of family guy ever. So I have to say the review we are commenting on is simply a person that either didnt get it, or simply looks for negatives in everything

My whole family tried to get into this episode, but ultimately ended up turning off the tv. To be fair, I haven’t been a fan of Family Guy for a long time. Still I try every now and then and am continuously reminded why I stopped watching it. I didn’t remember the show being as bad as it has apparently gotten by judging this episode. I chuckled a couple of times… Sighed, moaned, grunted and rolled my eyes the rest of it. I had to check for reviews to see if anybody actually thought that it was funny. Could I really be this out of touch? Has something in me died? Apparently it has, and I am going to seek help immediately.

THIS WAS THE BEST EPISODE I HAVE EVER EVER EVER SEEN!
I have all of them on my PC and without doubt this is the most thought up episode of all, very smart and great humor.
Also, the first episode in high definition, so I was loving it! :)

We LOVE family guy, like seriously love it.. We couldn’t wait for the new season and when i noticed the episode length I thought I would be in fora treat – i wasted almost 50 minutes of my life watching a tv cartoon I usually love.

I searched to see if anyone else was as dissapointed as I am.
Fingers crossed next weeks episode goes back to being like many of the old episodes.

I only remember two other episodes boring me so much – the starwars one and the one when stewie and brian got locked in the bank.

      yeah terrible episode

i loved it. maybe cause i love the book and the show:) perfect combination.

Wow nobody knows Clue. There is absolutley no connection whatsoever in this show to any possible type of mystery other than tangentially. It’s Clue. Watch the movie. They treated this like Star Wars matching shot for shot with many camera moves.

      • dom

not only were they doing clue but also murder by death and i’m sure a few others… if you haven’t seen murder by death check it out… hysterical comedy from neil simon

it was good as a murder mystery thing but didn’t laugh much. but for a not that funny family guy it was pretty good.

    • NiKKi

Dang, you are either a harsh critic or someone that doesn’t get the show at all. This was by far my favorite episode to date. It was funny, kept you on your toes, and it was great trying to figure out who the murder would be of all the beloved Family Guy characters.

Also, any episode with Old Man Herbert just cracks me up. He’s the only pedophile I enjoy, ever, in life.

I also want to compliment the use of 3D entering 2D shows. It looks beautiful to be honest. And the fact that last night’s episode they even changed the intro to a more 3D effect. It’s looking marvelous!

You’ve got to be kidding me? That was a wonderful episode, I was blown away by the 3D scenes as well as the 2D animation. I always wanted to be an animator like Seth MacFarlane and he is a great inspiration to me. I’ve been with him since his early work on Johnny Bravo and Cow and Chicken! He’s even sent me an autographed picture of Brian, my favorite character from the show!

No matter what anybody else says, the episode was fresh, the jokes were there, and it was a change from the slapstick comedy we’ve been given as of late (even though I love both). I’ve always been a fan of Family Guy and that will never change. This was a memorable episode and an experience so similar to a theater it’s mind blowing. :)
