The good people at USA were kind enough to let us folks here at Daemon’s TV get to see an advance copy of this week’s episode of COVERT AFFAIRS titled “Communication Breakdown”. Last week I mentioned how much I enjoyed Auggie getting more screen time while running an op with some old buddies, and how much I’d like to see more of that. Boy did Covert Affairs deliver in spades. This time Auggie gets a chance to go in on a mission that needs his expertise. Things get really interesting when the person he needs to find, turns out to be a woman from his past.
This episode proves that Auggie still has what it takes as an operative, only needing a little help here in there (in the form of others acting as his eyes mostly) to get a job done. He even got to demonstrate some of those moves he taught Annie in the gym a few episodes back, not letting the fact that he’s blind stop him from delivering a smack-down when necessary. In fact he actually used his lack of sight to his advantage at one point.
While Auggie may have been at the center of the episode, we still get to see plenty of the other cast, including Annie of course, who is sent in to help him. She did a great job of backing him up, stepping in when she was needed but also stepping out when she wasn’t, allowing Auggie to still be in control of the op. Basically she just helped him with observations of things he couldn’t see, letting Auggie be the one to make the decisions. When Auggie decides to go off-book, Annie has to choose between looking at him as her friend or an operative and decide whether to follow protocols or go with her gut and trust him.
We got the normal amount of action and adventure in the episode, plus a fair dose of comedy. Auggie cracked me up at one point by using the term “epic fail”. Oh and then there was this little exchange (I won’t say between who or why it was said, but it was freaking hilarious):
“It’s like Comic-Con for nerds.”
“Isn’t that just Comic-Con?”
As usual, there was also a bit of family drama going on for Annie. Her sister is trying to help out financially now that her husband is out of work and when Annie tries to give a hand, she inadvertently does something that causes a security issue. When Annie then has to take back her help, it pushes the sisters’ relationship to the limit, with one sister unable to tell the other what’s really happening and the other not understanding why.
By the end of the episode I was even more enthralled with Auggie’s character, something that I didn’t think was possible considering how much I liked him already. The final scenes were brilliantly played by Christopher Gorham and though I can’t say exactly what happened (as that would definitely spoil it for everyone) I will say that he was amazing.
Overall I found this episode of Covert Affairs extremely enjoyable, and no that’s not purely because Auggie was shirtless a couple times… though it didn’t hurt.
