Whether we wanted it or not, the second episode of ABC Family’s MELISSA & JOEY immediately followed the series premiere. Having conquered the premise of the show and having the relationships established in the premiere, I was ready for the show to provide more humor and substance. Still not sure if that occurred.
Melissa and Joey have settled into somewhat of a routine. So much so that she has decided not to hire a professional nanny, but rather settle for the guy that lied about running a youth camp out of college. That’s right, he has absolutely no experience with children. Why wouldn’t you hire him? Although for someone who was purportedly a wealthy commodities trader, he seems very comfortable doing laundry, vacuuming and cooking. Am I the only one that thinks that doesn’t quite go with the Porsche he drives “at least for the next 10 days”?
The theme is moving on and all of the characters have done so, with the exception of Ryder who mostly seemed to be playing a bit part this episode. Melissa has decided to move on by dating a lobbyist who is looking for votes. After he gets what he needs, he drops his facade entirely and reveals that he is not interested in her team, sports or otherwise. Not a very smart councilwoman to not suspect that was going to happen.
Meanwhile Joey is moving on by asserting his rights to his large flat screen TV. Melissa, after finding his sparse and sad belongings, encourages him to take what is his back from his estranged wife. Joey, fearful that he will lose his wife entirely and secretly hoping that she still is in love with him, leaves the one thing he truly loves behind – his club chair. He has visions of his wife sitting in the chair and missing him. The only thing Tiffany was doing in that chair was listing it for sale online. After seeing the picture of Tiffany’s “assets”, the viewer is immediately clued in as to the nature of Joey and Tiffany’s relationship – money. Now that the money is gone, so is their marriage.
Melissa, quick to dispense advice to everyone, also encourages Lennox to make new friends at her new public school. Lennox is reluctant to leave behind her snooty school friends that are now $40,000 and 2 hours away. She eventually brings home a new friend that she meets in the bathroom when she hears the girl puking. Funny, right? Right.
There is also a plotline involving Joey’s flat screen TV that Melissa doesn’t want in her living room because her interior designer wouldn’t like it. Oh and there is supposedly another TV in that room, but I haven’t spotted it. I am all about home decorating, but who would banish a 52 inch flat screen to the basement? Melissa acts like an 80 year old woman rather than a young 30s woman who should embrace technology. On another note, she has killer shoes.
I still enjoy the interaction between Melissa and Joey and I am sure we will see an increasing sexual tension with every new episode. I am not sure that it will be enough to keep me wanting more.
