LOUIE “Heckler/Cop Movie” Review

LOUIE (FX)

LOUIE touched a bit too close to home this week. In the ‘Heckler/Cop’ the first storyline was all about a bad night at the Comedy Cellar for Louie. He starts with a fairly funny routine, but after being repeatedly interrupted by an audience member, his focus is lost. He turns his standup on the young lady who messed up his flow and is brutal and blunt with his mocking, including wishing she would “die of AIDS.” It seems the audience is doing their job and laughing along, and she continues to fight with him even when he is thankful that her mother is dead. He wraps up his set and meets up with his comedian friends, including Todd Barry outside and is confronted by the young woman once again. Louie gets into detail about why her interrupting their sets is so disturbing to these guys, as most comedians relish their 15 minutes on stage each week. At the end, she actually begins to see why being a good person doesn’t lead to bothering someone during their comedy set, and Louie’s comedian buddies were convinced he could have actually turned this situation into a drink with the lady.

So you might ask why this hits home with me? Well, sometime last year I was the young blonde girl who made it my business to comment on Louis C.K.’s standup routine. And while I can only imagine he’s dealt with a few hecklers in his time, there were a few moments from last night’s episode which were literally word for word our conversation, specifically calling him out on making fun of rape. And we also had our heated conversation right in front of Todd Barry. So maybe when I wrote of closure on my blog last year, somehow Louis C.K. was thinking of a way to get his – or he just thought it would make a great story for his show.

For the second part of the episode, Louie tries to avoid acting, but his agent has already offered him to Matthew Broderick who is doing a Jewish remake of “The Godfather” set two years in the future. Yes you read right. Louie would be playing a small role as a cop in the film, because Matthew saw him in a late night movie and thought he was great. When he finally agrees to the part, he finds himself out of place on the movie set and unable to commit to a few lines in a scene with Matthew. Again, he is called out on not taking acting seriously and told to walk it off after he can’t get the lines down right. He finds himself in a local deli, still in police uniform and having to thwart a small time robbery, which cant happen with a prop gun.

Last night’s episode was exactly what us Louie fans needed – a return to form of awkwardness and brashness. When Louie succeeds, it’s because he is able to discuss real life situations or comfortably mock his own career, be it behind the scenes of a film or awkward moments on a standup stage.

Geeze. I’m sorry Danielle. I read both of your blog entries. The thing I like most about Louie C.K is his transparency. Most comedians put up this fun loving act and make up long extravagant stories and yet he just seems to tell stories that almost everyone knows and feels daily. Not only that but puts a hyper realistic outlook on it. It’s kind of hilarious how he’s now, “The King of Comedy,” and how things are going so well for him. I bet he just spends most of his time jinxing it.

As for what happened. I wouldn’t beat yourself over it so much. If it wasn’t for that he probably wouldn’t have been able to write that episode. I have a completely different outlook on a comedian now because of that 8 minutes mimicking your interaction with him.

Question: would you have had a drink with him if he turned the whole situation around? Hehe
