AMERICA’S TEST KITCHEN Season 10 DVD Review

America's Test Kitchen Season 10 DVD

PBS will release the 10th season of their popular cooking show, AMERICA’S TEST KITCHEN, on DVD on June 29, 2010.

Led by the recognizable, bow-tied Christopher Kimball, the team at America’s Test Kitchen is known for their rigorous recipe testing and reliable cooking advice. Season 10 includes 4 DVDs with the following 26 episodes:

Disc One:

Triple-Chocolate Mousse Cake; Chicken Classics, Reinvented; Best Weekend Breakfast; Classic Beef Braises; Two Ways With Pork; The Cookie Jar; Saucy Italian Favorites

Disc Two:

Meat and Potatoes for Company; Rolls and Loaves; Egg Dishes With An Accent; Sensational Skillet Recipes; An Austrian Supper; Who Wants Pasta?; An Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving

Disc Three:

Coconut Layer Cake; Salmon: Indoors and Out; Italian Bread and Sauce; Great Glazed Chicken; Chicken and Rice: Indian-Style; All-Time Cookie Favorites

Disc Four:

South-of-the-Border Supper; Best Burgers and Fries; The Italian Grill; Classic Asian Appetizers; Turkey on the Grill; Old-Fashioned Fruit Desserts

In addition to all the recipes, the team at America’s Test Kitchen taste tests different brands of ingredients (broth, vanilla, etc.) to find the best. They also test different gadgets (from deep fryers to teapots) and rate them on usefulness.

The thing I love about America’s Test Kitchen is that they put so much thought and research into each and every recipe. I trust their advice and recipes over any of the countless other chefs on TV (Alton Brown is a close second). After they try making a recipe a million different ways and come up with the best, they also tell you what didn’t work, so you don’t make the same mistakes.

Season 10 is full of so many mouthwatering recipes that I just can’t wait to try. To name a few: Carnitas, Old-Fashioned Burgers (ok, grinding your own meat is crazy, but these look so good!), Quick Tomato Sauce, and Triple-Chocolate Mousse Cake. The only downside is that some of the recipes are incredibly labor intensive (even Christopher Kimball jokes about the lengthy Ciabatta recipe being the kind of thing you do before being institutionalized). Though no doubt the recipes are delicious, if you have the time and inclination.

My favorite feature on the DVD is that all 50 recipes are available in a printable PDF on each disc. Another handy feature is that the DVD menu allows you to select by recipe, so you don’t have to fast forward through an episode if you are just looking for one particular recipe.

I learned so much watching Season 10 of America’s Test Kitchen and I can’t wait to get in the kitchen and bust out all of my newfound knowledge.
