TNT’s MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE Review

Men of a Certain Age

TNT will premiere its new original series, MEN OF A CERTAIN AGE, tonight at 10pm.

The series stars Ray Romano, Scott Bakula and Andre Braugher. It focuses on three middle-age friends and the challenges their face in their lives.
Ray Romano plays Joe, a recently separated father of two, who runs a party store and is dealing with a gambling problem.
Scott Bakula plays Terry, a laid-back actor/temp, who lives life like he was still in his twenties.
Andre Braugher plays Owen a husband and father of three children, who works as a car salesman at his father’s dealership, with whom he has quite a complex relationship.

I am usually a fan of TNT’s programming, and so of course, Men of a Certain Age sparked my interest. And to be perfectly honest, the biggest draw for me was Scott Bakula, whom I still love from his Quantum Leap days (that show never gets old).

So far I have seen the first three episodes and am liking it ok, it’s not the best show that I have ever seen, but it is quite enjoyable.

The friendship between the three men is made interesting by the fact that they are all very different and have very different lives.
Each episode is divided between us seeing each man live his life and the three of them getting together.

To be honest, not much happens each episode, this is definitely more of a character study show, so your enjoyment will depend on how compelling you find the characters.

I personally enjoy Joe and Terry’s stories, but I’m having a hard time warming up to Owen, he just doesn’t seem like a very strong character and I could do without most of his scenes, but I’m hoping that there will be some evolution in future episodes. In fact, I should mention that Owen has a pretty fun storyline in episode three, which will make you wish all the car salesmen you meet were like him, but I’m still waiting for a more drastic change.

As for the acting, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed, all three main guys are great and it is up to the standards we have come to expect from TNT.

Finally, I should also mention that some of the moments from the show might be lost on me since it focuses on men in theirs 40s and I am a woman in her 20s. But I guess the fact that I enjoyed it none the less is a testament to the quality of the show.

Overall, I think that if your looking for a simple, enjoyable new show to start watching, Men of a Certain Age could be it. As I said, I have seen three episodes so far and am planning on continuing to watch it.

I was looking forward to this show for the same reason – Scott Bakula – however, fortunately it did not disappoint on any level. A few times I inwardly cringed waiting for “Ray Romano” type comedy to start, but it never did and that was great! The scene between Owen and his father – even though I had just “met” this character – was really wrenching. But even more “true” was the scene between Owen and his wife in the hospital – “You can’t quit”. True, true, and true again.

I can count on one hand the number of shows I watch now that reality tv hell has taken over, and this show is now added to that small list as a ‘don’t miss’. Good review.

I’m glad you enjoyed it Carole. I personally think it gets better and if you enjoyed watching all three guys, then I think you’re going to like the new episodes as well.
