DEXTER “Living the Dream” Early Review Season 4 Premiere

DEXTER (Season 4)

The season 4 premiere episode of DEXTER titled “Living the Dream” finds Dexter doing something quite unusual: Living a Normal Life. Dexter is now happily married to Rita, has a new baby boy that just won’t go to sleep and hasn’t killed a single soul for months.

While this set up would be quite common for your average joe, for Dexter, this situation is the equivalent of Hell. Not only is he dead tired but now he doesn’t get to let his Dark passenger out to play, which causes much anxiety. It’s sort of like watching a Junkie secretly jonesing for a fix, but yet it’s not creepy to watch.

One also weird thing about Dexter’s approach to his secret self is how he seems to really embrace that part much more fully. In a certain sense, the fact that he could not kill for so long might have solidified the relationship with his dark passenger. It is indeed true that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Also, you might be wondering how the other characters are faring in Dexter’s world. Not that I really care but let me just give you a lowdown on where some of them are at:

- Debra is happily shacked up with her musician boyfriend and she is still looking into Harry’s past, getting closer to Dexter’s mom. She is also taken aback by the return of Agent Frank Lundy (Keith Carradine). Her storyline is not the most interesting of all but it does have potential to grow into something bigger.

- Lundy, now retired from the FBI, is back in pursuit of “The Trinity Killer” a prolific serial killer who has been going on for decades now. It’s good to see Lundy back. Keith Carradine has great acting chops and he brings a lot of depth and charisma to the show.

- “The Trinity Killer” played by John Lithgow is introduced in this episode. He is creepy and scary. And not in a funny way. It’s hard to really know what kind of nemesis he will be to Dexter but I have a feeling that John will be a cool nemesis.

All and all, Dexter is back and in a big way. For the first time in the series, Dexter will battle three enemies: Bad Guys, the Trinity Killer and the most important foe of all, Lack of Sleep. Good Luck, Dex!

Dexter is married to Rita, not Debra, though incest does sound interesting…

I liked the episode a lot, and overall I like everything about the show, except for one thing: long term creativity. Dexter continues to kill and wriggle out of different situation. It’s fun, it’s wrong to enjoy, but it’s the same. I’ll still watch, but I would like to see some changes. The first scene with the Trinity Killer is the most disturbing of the whole series.

@The1337. Oops sorry about that. I fixed my mistake. THanks.

Except in real life, where Michael C. Hall (Dexter) is married to Jennifer Leann Carpenter (Debra).

I hate to watch reruns but this the season opener, I watched twice. I like that there are new dynamics, especially with Quinn, Angel and Maria. John Lithgoe is creepy creepy creepy with his very innocuous approach. Will watch this episode again.
