TRUE BLOOD Season 2 Finale Title Explained

true blood finale

We previously posted a preview of the season 2 finale of TRUE BLOOD titled “Beyond Here Lies Nothin” (Season 2 Episode 12) airing in less than two weeks Sunday September 13.

What we didn’t know at the time was that the title of the episode was actually the title of a song “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’” By Bob Dylan and it turns out that the song was even used in the promo for season 2.

Now maybe I am reading too much into this, but it seems really coincidental that the song with the same name as the title of the season 2 finale would ALSO be in a promo for season 2.

My curiosity pushed me into looking into this some more and I went ahead and read the lyrics of “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’” and I think that I have cracked the code.

I believe that this song was chosen because the lyrics apply to Sookie and I believe that it is Bill saying these words to her. Now, I realize I am biased here since I really like the Bill-Sookie relationship and do not see the Eric-Sookie thing happening. But I think that I am right on this.

I suggest, you read the lyrics to “Beyond Here Lies Nothin’” yourself and you be the judge. Do you see what I see?

I love you pretty baby
You’re the only love I’ve ever known
Just as long as you stay with me
The whole world is my throne
Beyond here lies nothin’
Nothin’ we can call our own

I’m movin’ after midnight
Down boulevards of broken cars
Don’t know what I’d do without it
Without this love that we call ours
Beyond here lies nothin’
Nothin’ but the moon and stars

Down every street there’s a window
And every window made of glass
We’ll keep on lovin’ pretty baby
For as long as love will last
Beyond here lies nothin’
But the mountains of the past

My ship is in the harbor
And the sails are spread
Listen to me pretty baby
Lay your hand upon my head
Beyond here lies nothin’
Nothin’ done and nothin’ said

If you weren’t aware, every episode in Season 2 is named after a song that is used.

  • Eric

Hi, indeed I was aware of this but i felt that this title had some additional significance too.

  • Kat

since Eric and Sookie kinda get married in the book i think if they don’t happen on true blood they are going way to far off track… Eric is a fun character… and he has a sense of hummer.

  • Kay

I agree with you. Every title for an episode has a specific song chosen to fit the episode. “Beyond Here Lies Nothing” definitely describes what Bill is saying to Sookie possibly. It sounds very ominous.

I agree with Kay. It does describe Bill to Sookie but does sound ominous and true. Without Sookie, Bill would have nothing, as we know he has been lonely and miserable for most of is vampire life. Thus, I think any significance it has, is to describe Bill’s relationship to Sookie.

On another note, it also describes a lot of relationships and people’s situations this season – Tara and her feelings for Eggs, Jason trying to find a purpose, Sam thought he found love but only deceipt, heck even Tara’s mom having changed her life but still not being accepted by Tara.

I think that is why the song was chosen for Season 2 – for the entirety, not just Bill and Sookie.

Hello! If you are familiar with the books…I have not read all but know the plots to most….Sookie and Eric DO get together and this is a big part of some of the books. The book and the show have MOSTLY the same story line but the show has added or changed a few things to be a bit more interesting. I knew after reading the plots of the books to see that the show is going in that same direction with Sookie and Eric.

  • Jenna

JMO you are one of the “Billstruck” and the only outcome you can see include St Bill the made up construct of AB not the Bill fashioned by the Author of the books. Read the books. I do not thik AB is foolish enough to deviate from the Eric/sookie relationship that exists in 5 of the 9 books.

  • Lindsay

I know you say you’re a sookie-bill fan, but read the books. They AREN’T going to be together forever, and if you read the books, you’ll be glad. The song should really mean beyond here lies nothing, as in their relationship since for those who read the books know the REAL reason he was out to seduce Sookie.

  • dj

As a writer you should do your research. Read the books. If you hate Eric you will really hate Quinn when Sookie crawls in his bed. btw jenna “Billstruck” I love it :-| )

  • Lilly

I read the books. I don’t get why people should want the show to be like the books. I for one am really glad it isn’t because it’s always full of surprises. The book and show to me are two separate entities. I thought the season finale episode was gonna be called “Before the Night is Over” a song by Jerry Lee Lewis since I heard a spoiler about a certain Bill/Sookie scene in the finale they are using the song for but this is good. I like that they are using the “Beyond Here Lies Nothing” from the promo videos.

Sookie & Bill will not stay together, they were never meant to be.
Bill is not the southern gentleman that viewers think he is, his reason for being back in Bon Temps was seduce and bring Sookie to the queen so that her abilities could be used.
Bill has carried out his mission a little to well in the seduction dept, luckily for Sookie, Eric finds out and saves her from both maniacs Bill & the Queen.

Thanks for posting these lyrics and offering your interpretation of what they mean for the show. I must agree that I think they do apply to Bill and Sookie’s relationship as well. However, as an Eric Lover, I have my own interpretation… Bill’s ship is in the harbor and he’s about to set sail, leaving a void in Sookie’s life (and bed) for a big blond Viking vampire. Bill and Sookie’s love may remain, but beyond here their relationship will dwindle to nothing. I know Alan Ball delights in mixing it up from the books and shocking us fans, but he has said more than once that the Sookie story is taken from the books and even though it is much expanded on, even using a skeletal outline of her story will have much Eric/Sookie happiness. ;-D

  • true blood fan and the sookie stackhouse novels

well, if you read all 10 novels of the southern vampire cronicals as its been nick named , you would no that later on sookie ends up hating bill for reasons i will not spoil, we will just say he screws up ! anyway and by book 4 sookie and eric will have already hooked up. now the show has deveated some from the book , but has kept its core stories, such as the love traingle brooding between sookie, eric, and bill, jessica does not exist in the books, lafayate is dead(forgive misspells) and so so on. anything could happen with alan ball !

  • FairyPants

The song sort of uses the same imagery as a lot of other Dylan songs. Ships to be specific. I interpret this song to mean: That he is going to move on, even though he doesn’t want to… and without her his life will be empty because “beyond here lies nothing” His “sails are spread” and he’s leaving… but he’s sad about it.

I am sorry but have any of you read the books. (I haven’t read the last one I am going to the library to get it today) I love Eric as much as the rest of you, but Bill truly does love Sookie. “I would die for her, if you hurt her I will kill you, Can you say the same?” Yes he originally did go there on the orders of the queen, but he fell in “luuuuuvvvv” and did not confess to Sookie. No body has EVER done that. (please hear the sarcasm) He made mistakes but no one has ever done that either(love the humaity of Bill). There are a lot of things that Bill could have done differently but he made decisions based on the protection of Sookie and not for the love of Sookie so maybe she is just a posession to him after all(light bulb). Now I have to rethink my whole stratagy. Finally, in the end when all the dust settles and the smoke clears and the WHOLE truth (*SPOILER*Eric works for her great-grand father) I think that in the Books Sookie will end up with Eric but the show she will end up with Bill, that way the world is happy and they all walk off into the sunset\moon rise and live happily every after on their white horses. That is if the show makes it that long………….

I myself am torn..When the series started I was a Bill lover. Then after season 1 ended I bought the books and read them all over the break. Then it happened and all hell broke loose, at that time I became an Eric lover!! I feel like I am in a love triangle myself!! They both are completely different entities(the series and books that is), where series Bill is more sincere and sweet and book Bill is at times sarcastic and can be somewhat rude at times(not always to be fair.)But as the books go on Bill does get written out a bit and does protect her with no thought for his own life. Eric in the book is much like he is in the series except for the fact that in the book he not Bill staked Longshadow. Also, he has no problems coming on to Sookie trying to get her to come to him freely. Sookie seems more open to the book Eric that the series character. IMO!! She has no problems going or calling Fangtasia to talk to him when she needs to.. That’s what turned me onto Eric in the books, he seems like he is always there for her when she needs him. I love the two entities (The books and the show)!! They are an addiction and I have read the books numerous times and still aren’t tired of them. I highly recommend reading them during the break!!! If you don’t want to spoil anything just read the first two books and compare for yourself.. Then read the other books after each corresponding season. I bet you will be torn like I am!! If you thought that the dream scene with Eric and Sookie was HOT, that is nothing compared to the scenes in the books between the two of them.. Can you say SHOWER SCENE!!! I knew you could….

I personally have not read the novels so I’m not acquainted with the “canon” plot. Nor do I plan on reading the books, simply because from what everyone here has explained (it was helpful, so thanks :) !), it’s not something I would want to read. I don’t like plot twists like the ones people are talking about, with relationships ending because of deceit, and all the like.

I for one hope the show becomes its own entity and creates an alternate reality for the Sookie Stackhouse novels. The way the show has cast its characters sounds nothing like the book versions, but I for one have been tainted by the show (I shall willingly admit) and don’t think I’d enjoy the books very much as a result… But I still appreciate Charlaine Harris!!

I hope that the Moyer/Paquin romance is a good omen for the show. Long live the Bill/Sookie romance <3

MMMM….If we’re just pulling out some lyrics here, on the side of Team Eric, it may apply to Sookie and Eric. Episode 9, Eric tells Sookie she could do as them..trading the sun for “the moon and the stars” (song-nothin’ but the moon and stars,)and then Eric does say to Sookie when she tells him there’s love in him..he replies “only for Sookie”…mmmm…(song-you’re the only love I’ve ever known). episode 9- Eric was ready to “set sail” sort of speak with Godric, but not, then Sookie (episode 10 opener) places her hand on his head (song- lay your hand upon my head–actually Godric does the same)–when she kisses each of his cheeks…Eric is so misunderstood at this point still…so darn HOT!!!

But it could be about Sookie and Bill…lol
