10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU is a new show on ABC Family based on the popular 1999 movie of the same name.
First of all, I love the 10 Things I Hate About You movie, I don’t even know how many times I have seen it (but it’s a lot). So of course I wasn’t too sure making it a show would be such a great idea, or more importantly I wasn’t sure they would be able to recapture the essence of the movie.
After watching the first episode, I know two things, 1) the movie is the movie and I don’t think anything will ever equal it, 2) I actually really enjoyed the show and am setting my season pass for it.
Now I know this sounds a little contradictory, but this is the way I’m looking at it. You need to think of the show as something separate from the movie, that’s the only way you’re going to be able to see and enjoy all the good things about it.
I personally thought the pilot set up the story and characters really well, and I cannot wait to find out how it all evolves.
As for the new cast, there will be some comparison with the old actors obviously, but so far I think they’re ok. Actually, I think you’re going to fall in love with their new Patrick Verona, sure he only has like two lines in the pilot, but that’s enough for me.
Overall, the show definitely exceeded my expectations and I found myself really enjoying it and getting excited for future episodes. That said it will never replace the movie, but I don’t think that’s what they’re trying to do and that’s why it works.
So don’t forget to tune in tonight, Tuesday July 7, at 8pm on ABC Family.
